EctoDefender: The Afterlife Standoff
Inspiration
The inspiration for "EctoDefender" sprang from the game jam's theme of minimalism. We wanted to create something that was not only simple and engaging but also imbued with a narrative that could resonate on a deeper level. The concept of an afterlife defender emerged from a brainstorming session where we discussed classic arcade games and the universal themes of protection and invasion. Combining these elements, we envisioned a minimalistic yet compelling world where players fend off ghosts attempting to invade the overworld.
What We Learned
Throughout the development process, our team gained invaluable insights into rapid prototyping, asset creation with a minimalist aesthetic, and the importance of gameplay balancing. We also learned to streamline communication and project management within a tight deadline, focusing on the essential features to ensure a polished, enjoyable game.
How We Built It
"EctoDefender" was developed using GDevelop, a choice driven by its flexibility and ease of use, especially beneficial for the time constraints of a game jam. We started with creating basic mechanics—movement, shooting, and enemy AI. Once the core gameplay was functional, we iterated on the design, adding minimalistic art and sound effects to enhance the experience without overwhelming the core concept. We focused on creating a seamless loop of challenge and reward, keeping players engaged through progressively harder waves of enemies.
Challenges Faced
One of the main challenges was balancing simplicity with depth. We aimed to make a game that was easy to pick up but hard to master, requiring us to fine-tune the difficulty curve and enemy behaviors. Managing time was another hurdle; with just 48 hours to bring our vision to life, we had to make tough decisions on what features to include or cut. Additionally, ensuring the game ran smoothly across different platforms required careful optimization and testing.
Conclusion
"EctoDefender" stands as a testament to what can be achieved with a clear vision, teamwork, and a passion for game development. This project was a journey of discovery, creativity, and problem-solving, embodying the spirit of the game jam's minimalism theme. We hope players find joy in the challenge it presents and the simple beauty of its execution.
