Inspiration

My project, EcoWise, is motivated by the urgent need for better ways to manage energy, given the many challenges we face in today's energy world. Traditional energy systems are often wasteful and expensive, causing harm to the environment by emitting lots of carbon and using up resources. As worries about climate change grow and non-renewable resources run low, it's crucial that we shift towards more sustainable energy methods. I am determined to confront these complex problems by creating EcoWise, a device that uses technology and data to change how we manage energy. My goal for EcoWise is to use energy more efficiently, reduce emissions, and make our energy systems stronger.

What it does

EcoWise is all about making energy management easier and more efficient. It starts by collecting important data from sensors about things like energy usage, weather, and occupancy. Then, using smart technology like machine learning, it figures out patterns in how energy is used. This helps it make real-time adjustments to save energy and money. It even predicts when equipment might need fixing, so there's no unexpected downtime. Plus, EcoWise makes sure to use renewable energy sources like solar and wind power whenever possible, helping the environment too. And to make it all user-friendly, there's a handy chatbot that's like having your own energy expert right at your fingertips. For the purpose of simplicity and creating an MVP (Minimal Viable Product), I have created a heat-monitoring system along with a smart energy-managing chatbot to validate my design.

How I built it

In essence, my heat-monitoring system operates by simulating external temperature and occupancy data, using this information to regulate heating activation. However, for practical use, it requires authentic sensor data instead of simulated inputs, alongside advanced algorithms for precise energy optimization. Additionally, a sophisticated chatbot, akin to a climate scientist, seamlessly integrates into the system. Developed using Botpress and fine-tuned through iterative coding, this chatbot offers intuitive user support, enhancing the overall experience and promoting energy-efficient practices.

Challenges I ran into

Firstly, I had very little experience coding in Python, so I used the majority of my time researching how to code and create the small amount of code I have for my heat-monitoring system. I originally was planning to create the chatbot prototype on Python, however, I found that it required a lot of technical skill and thinking! So I found Botpress, a handy chatbot-creating platform, and created it there. That was one of the easier parts of creating my prototypes! Creating prototypes for systems like EcoWise presented several challenges. One primary challenge is obtaining accurate and reliable data from sensors. Ensuring that the sensors effectively capture relevant information such as temperature, occupancy, and energy usage in real time can be difficult, especially in dynamic environments. In addition, I had to find some reliable data or how it would look to help test whether the heat-monitoring system would actually work well.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'm really proud of the direction my project is taking, particularly in how it addresses environmental concerns through innovative energy management solutions. By focusing on optimizing energy usage, reducing emissions, and integrating renewable energy sources, I feel like we're making a real difference in combating climate change. One aspect that stands out to me is our emphasis on user accessibility and engagement. My user-friendly chatbot interface, for example, makes complex technology accessible to everyone, empowering individuals to take part in energy conservation efforts. I'm also proud of the technical challenges I've overcome, like obtaining accurate sensor data and developing basic algorithms. These achievements showcase my technical prowess and problem-solving abilities. Overall, I believe my project reflects our vision, expertise, and dedication to making a positive impact on both the environment and people's lives.

What I learned

Through developing prototypes and working on my project, I've learned about the complexities of energy management and the challenges of integrating renewable sources efficiently. I've enhanced my problem-solving skills by tackling obstacles like obtaining accurate sensor data and designing user-friendly interfaces. This experience has deepened my understanding of sustainability and the role of technology in addressing environmental challenges. Overall, it's been a valuable journey of learning, growth, and commitment to making a positive impact.

What's next for EcoWise

Next, EcoWise involves refining prototypes, scaling up to reach a wider audience, and staying ahead of emerging technologies. I'll focus on optimizing algorithms, enhancing user interfaces, and fostering partnerships to deploy EcoWise in real-world settings. Ongoing research and development will drive innovation in sensor technology and renewable energy integration. Ultimately, my goal is to continue making a positive impact by improving energy management practices and promoting sustainability.
