JOYRIDE

Inspiration

Growing up in Africa, we saw many children unable to afford toys while rich families could easily provide them. At the same time, plastic waste and discarded boxes filled our streets and communities JOYRIDE was inspired by a simple but powerful idea: turning waste into wonder. By collecting and designing plastics and boxes into toy cars, we give every child the chance to play, dream, and smile — while protecting our environment.

What it does

It builds hope on wheels by giving children equal opportunities to play while teaching sustainability and responsibility through recycled creativity.

How we built it

We built joyride by first collecting plastic bottles, broken containers, and cardboard boxes from local households and markets, then designing simple sketches to shape toy cars that were safe, durable, and fun. Using recycled bottle caps for wheels, we assembled the cars by cutting, gluing, and painting the materials, before testing them with children in our community to gather feedback on durability and playfulness. Finally, we distributed the cars at very low cost, ensuring that even poor families could afford them, turning discarded waste into joy and opportunity for every child.

Challenges we ran into

Some plastics were too brittle, requiring us to experiment with stronger alternatives Another problem was convincing people that recycled toys are safe and valuable this took effort and storytelling.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to collect clean our streets by removing wastes as well as selling some toy cars to our friends

What we learned

we learnt that its everyone's responsibility to be in a clean environment

What's next for JOYRIDE

we want to improve our cars to be able to use remotes to control them.
