Inspiration

Our team was inspired by the growing importance of sustainable practices and the need for individuals to generate wealth. We wanted to find an intersect between increasing awareness of sustainability and helping people invest in companies that value ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) factors. With consumers increasingly choosing to do business with companies that prioritize ESG as a core competency, we aimed to create a platform that allows users to align their investment portfolios with their financial and ethical goals.

What it does

EcoWealth is a portfolio recommendation system that takes user inputs for different ESG categories and applies them as weights within the system. The platform offers a personalized approach, enabling users to choose which ESG values matter most to them while balancing investment return. EcoWealth returns a set of 30 mutual funds that attempt to meet user requirements and follows up with the user to ensure the investment portfolio matches their needs.

How we built it

We began by finding a dataset that included various financial performance indicators as well as Sustainability, Compliance (Governance), and Social Justice indicators. The front-end mockup was built with Figma. We then worked on linking Natural Language Processing to a Neural Network to determine the extent to which users valued the four performance indicators, assigning different weights to them accordingly.

Challenges we ran into

Our ideas compared vs. our ability to execute them with an extremely limited knowledge set.

Our main challenge was realizing our own technical limitations when executing our idea. We were unable to create a working neural network that learns and returns adjusted sets of mutual funds due to the approach we initially took.

What we learned

We learned about the potential of providing people with investment recommendations based on ESG Performance Data and the importance of balancing technical skills and innovative thinking. Despite our limitations, we believe our idea is executable and valuable.

What's next for EcoWealth

EcoWealth will continue as a passion project within our group until we finish. To launch the platform, we plan to source, refine, and clean data, taking advantage of the growing ESG landscape. Next, we aim to complete the neural network model to take inputs from an NLP-adjusted user entry. Finally, we will create a feedback system that adjusts the weights of performance indicators and generates profitable portfolios aligned with users' values.
