EcoWarriors: Building a Smarter Recycling Future

🌱 Inspiration
The idea for EcoWarriors came from two major frustrations:

  1. Waste mismanagement – Seeing plastic littering streets and water bodies made me realize how little incentive people have to recycle properly.
  2. Lack of consumer awareness – Many people unknowingly use expired or counterfeit products simply because tracking this information is tedious.

I was inspired by:

  • Blockchain-based reward systems (like Plastic Bank) that incentivize recycling.
  • AI-powered product recognition (Google Lens, Amazon Go) making scanning effortless.
  • Dual-QR solutions from research papers, ensuring traceability from purchase to disposal.

📚 What I Learned While building EcoWarriors, I explored:
✅ AI/ML for waste classification – Training models to identify packaging materials (plastic, paper, e-waste).
✅ QR-based tracking – Implementing secure, tamper-proof product validation.
✅ Tokenized rewards – Studying blockchain microtransactions for fair incentivization.
✅ User psychology – How gamification (points, badges) boosts recycling habits.

⚙️ How I Built It Tech Stack

  • Frontend : React Native and Tailwind CSS
  • Backend : Node.js (reward logic).
  • AI: TensorFlow Lite (on-device waste recognition) + Google Vision (barcode/QR).

Key Features Developed

  1. Smart Scanning
    • Users scan products via QR, barcode, or AI camera (e.g., detects a "Frooti bottle" as PET plastic).
  2. Reward System
    • 1kg plastic = ₹10 (redeemable as vouchers or cashback).
  3. Expiry/Alerts
    • Notifications like "Your milk expires tomorrow!"
  4. Fraud Detection
    • Flags counterfeit products via QR validation.

🔥 Challenges Faced

  1. AI Accuracy
    • Early versions misclassified black plastics. Fixed by augmenting training data.
  2. QR Tampering
    • Implemented cryptographic signatures to prevent fake recycling claims.
  3. User Adoption
    • Added social sharing ("I recycled 10kg this month!") to drive virality.

EcoWarriors proves that sustainability can be simple, rewarding, and tech-driven. Let’s make recycling a habit—one scan at a time! ♻️💡
