Inspiration

During our discussions with faculty members and by observing local industries, we realized that many MSMEs struggle with high electricity costs but lack affordable tools to understand where energy is being wasted. Most existing energy management solutions are designed for large industries and are too expensive for small businesses. This inspired us to build EcoVolt Guardian, a simple and intelligent solution that helps MSMEs monitor energy usage, identify wastage, and make informed decisions to reduce costs while promoting sustainable energy practices.

What it does

EcoVolt Guardian is an AI-powered smart energy management system that continuously monitors the electricity consumption of industrial machines using IoT sensors. It collects real-time energy data, analyzes consumption patterns, detects abnormal power usage, and provides alerts when unusual activity is identified. The platform also predicts potential maintenance requirements based on energy trends and offers practical recommendations to improve energy efficiency. A user-friendly dashboard allows factory owners to track energy consumption, estimated costs, and overall equipment performance from anywhere.

How we built it

We designed EcoVolt Guardian by combining IoT hardware with AI-based data analysis. An ESP32 microcontroller collects voltage and current data from connected sensors and sends it to a cloud database through Wi-Fi. The collected data is processed using Python-based machine learning models to identify unusual energy consumption patterns and predict possible equipment issues. We developed a simple dashboard using Flutter to visualize live energy usage, historical trends, and system alerts. Firebase was used for cloud storage and real-time data synchronization.

Challenges we ran into

As beginners, understanding industrial energy monitoring and selecting suitable sensors was challenging. Integrating hardware with cloud services and ensuring stable communication between devices required several iterations. We also faced difficulties in generating meaningful AI insights using limited sample data. Another challenge was designing a solution that remains affordable for MSMEs while still offering valuable features. Through continuous learning, testing, and debugging, we gradually improved both the hardware and software components.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of transforming a real-world industrial problem into a practical and affordable solution. Successfully integrating IoT devices, cloud connectivity, and AI into a single platform was a significant achievement for our team. We developed a working concept that can monitor energy usage, generate useful insights, and demonstrate how technology can help MSMEs reduce operational costs. Most importantly, we created a project with the potential for real-world adoption and future scalability.

What we learned

This project taught us how IoT, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing can work together to solve practical industry challenges. We improved our skills in embedded systems, data collection, cloud integration, machine learning, and application development. Beyond technical knowledge, we learned the importance of teamwork, project planning, problem-solving, and designing solutions with the end user in mind. We also gained valuable experience in building technology that addresses sustainability and energy efficiency.

What's next for EcoVolt Guardian

Our next goal is to enhance EcoVolt Guardian with more advanced AI capabilities for accurate predictive maintenance and personalized energy-saving recommendations. We plan to support solar energy monitoring, carbon footprint analysis, and automated energy optimization. Future versions will include compatibility with additional industrial equipment, detailed analytics for factory managers, and integration with smart manufacturing systems. Ultimately, we aim to transform EcoVolt Guardian into an affordable, scalable, and commercially viable energy management platform for MSMEs across India.
