🌱 Inspiration

Shopping independently is something most of us take for granted, but for people who are visually impaired, it can be overwhelming. We wanted to create a solution that makes grocery shopping accessible, simple, and empowering. That’s where the idea of combining a smart basket with a voice assistant—EcoVoice—was born.

🛒 What it does

EcoVoice Smart Basket helps blind and visually impaired users shop without needing constant assistance.

Detects items placed inside the basket using camera/sensors + AI recognition.

Provides real-time voice feedback about the item’s name, quality, and freshness.

Can optionally weigh items and calculate costs, reducing checkout hassles.

⚙️ How we built it

ESP32-CAM with OV2640 for capturing item images.

Machine learning model trained to recognize fruits and vegetables.

Voice output module / text-to-speech system (EcoVoice) to announce the results.

Prototype basket integrated with sensors for weighing and data collection.

🚧 Challenges we ran into

Balancing simplicity and detail in voice feedback so it’s useful but not overwhelming.

Ensuring high accuracy in object detection, even under poor lighting.

Making the hardware portable and affordable.

Designing with accessibility in mind (blind-friendly interface).
