Inspiration

The urgency to combat the plastic pollution in the rivers and different places is our source of inspiration. It was the direct impact on the environment that prompted us to produce a solution, which applies innovative technology for identifying and eliminating the plastic waste.

What it does

Using drone imagery, the YOLOv8 from EcoVision detects plastics in the rivers and also other areas. The object detector identifies the plastics using bounding boxes and also simultaneously calculates the amount. The system tags the location and stores it in a database. This type of information enables the officials to remove plastics effectively and route them into recycling.

How we built it

We created EcoVision through the fusion of YOLOv8 and drone camera footage. The identified plastics are detected within the bounding boxes by the object detection algorithm, while their location is emplaced through geotagging. The information is finally retained in a database for the easy access by the concerned officials. Our solution is an all-around combination of the hardware, software and also machine learning.

Challenges we ran into

The integration of drone imagery into the YOLOv8 proved to pose many challenges. Accuracy of the plastic detection and real-time geotagging had to be achieved by solving many technical challenges. Furthermore, the issues with adjusting the system to be optimized for a high-efficiency database storage were very individual.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of having a smooth integration between drone technology, the YOLOv8 and geotagging process. Two major successes are the accurate identification of plastics and also building a reliable database infrastructure. We look forward to the positive impact that our solution may contribute in addressing the plastic pollution.

What we learned

The process of creating EcoVision was a very valuable experience in the interplay between deep learning and environmental preservation. It is through understanding how to deal with the challenges that come in implementing sophisticated technologies for sustainable reasons.

From there, we intend to develop many EcoVision features. This entails developing the plastic detection algorithms more closely, looking for other environmental uses as well, and working with recycling efforts to make sure that only plastics which are used properly. However, EcoVision is not only a great solution; it’s also about the new movement towards a cleaner and greener future.
