Inspiration

The inspiration for EcoVision AI came from the growing problem of improper waste disposal and poor waste segregation. Many people are unsure whether waste should be recycled, composted, or treated as hazardous, which can lead to increased pollution and reduced recycling efficiency. We wanted to create a simple and intelligent solution that helps people identify and dispose of waste correctly.

By combining artificial intelligence and image recognition, EcoVision AI aims to make waste management smarter and more accessible. The project also addresses problems such as overflowing garbage bins by allowing users to report them, helping authorities prioritize waste collection. Our goal is to use technology to promote environmental responsibility and contribute to cleaner, greener, and more sustainable communities.

What it does

EcoVision AI is a smart waste management solution that uses artificial intelligence to identify and classify waste from images. Users can upload or capture a picture of waste, and the AI categorizes it as recyclable, organic, hazardous, or other types of waste. The system then provides clear instructions on how the waste should be disposed of or recycled properly.

EcoVision AI also allows users to report overflowing garbage bins by uploading images and sharing their location. These reports can be viewed on an administrator dashboard, helping waste management teams identify problem areas and prioritize garbage collection. The project aims to improve waste segregation, increase recycling efficiency, reduce pollution, and create cleaner and more sustainable communities.

How we built it

We built EcoVision AI by combining web development and artificial intelligence to create a smart waste management solution. The platform can be developed with React for the user interface and Python using Flask or FastAPI for the backend. For the AI system, we use TensorFlow to train and run an image classification model that identifies different types of waste, such as recyclable, organic, and hazardous waste. Users can upload an image, and the AI analyzes it and provides the appropriate waste category and disposal instructions.

We also designed features for reporting overflowing garbage bins and managing waste collection. Users can submit a report with an image and location, while the information is stored using Firebase and displayed on an administrator dashboard. The dashboard helps monitor reported areas and prioritize waste collection. By combining AI, image recognition, location-based reporting, and a simple user-friendly interface, we built EcoVision AI as a practical solution for cleaner and more sustainable communities.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating EcoVision AI, a solution that combines artificial intelligence with environmental sustainability to address a real-world problem. We successfully designed a system that can identify different types of waste from images and provide users with guidance for proper disposal. We are also proud of including features such as overflowing-bin reporting and location-based monitoring, which can help improve waste collection.

Another accomplishment we are proud of is bringing together different technologies to create a practical and user-friendly solution. Through this project, we gained valuable experience in AI, software development, problem-solving, and teamwork. Most importantly, we are proud that our idea has the potential to encourage better waste segregation, increase recycling, and contribute to cleaner and greener communities.

What we learned

While developing EcoVision AI, we learned how artificial intelligence can be used to solve real-world environmental problems. We gained a better understanding of image classification, data processing, and how AI models can identify different types of waste. We also learned how to connect the AI system with a user-friendly application and provide useful results to users.

We also learned the importance of teamwork, planning, testing, and continuous improvement. During the project, we faced challenges while integrating different technologies and improving the accuracy of our solution. These experiences helped us develop our technical, creative, and problem-solving skills. Most importantly, we learned that technology can be used responsibly to create practical solutions that benefit both people and the environment.

What's next for EcoVision AI

The next step for EcoVision AI is to improve the accuracy and reliability of its AI waste classification system by training it with a larger and more diverse dataset. We also plan to add more waste categories and provide more detailed recycling and disposal instructions. In the future, we want to develop a mobile application so users can identify waste instantly using their phone camera.

We also plan to introduce smart notifications, real-time garbage-bin monitoring, and advanced analytics for waste management authorities. EcoVision AI could eventually be integrated with smart bins and IoT devices to automatically detect when bins are full and notify collection teams. Our long-term goal is to expand EcoVision AI into a complete smart waste management platform that helps communities reduce waste, improve recycling, and build a cleaner and more sustainable future.
