Inspiration
Waste management is broken at the most basic level. People don’t know what they’re throwing away. Recyclable items end up in landfills, biodegradable waste gets mixed with plastics, and sustainability becomes confusing instead of simple. Ecoverse AI was inspired by this gap: people want to do the right thing, but they lack instant clarity.
What it does
Ecoverse AI allows users to scan or upload an image of waste and instantly:
- Identify the object
- Determine whether it’s biodegradable, recyclable, hazardous, or non-degradable
- Provide close recycling points from user's location, actionable disposal guidance
- Encourage eco-friendly behavior without requiring prior knowledge No manuals. No confusion. Just point, scan, and act.
How I built it
The system combines:
- Computer vision to analyze uploaded images
- AI classification models to identify waste type
- Intelligent reasoning to map items to correct disposal categories
- A clean, minimal frontend to keep the experience frictionless The entire pipeline is optimized for speed, clarity, and real-world usability, not just theory.
Challenges I ran into
- Edge cases in waste classification (mixed materials, unclear images)
- Balancing accuracy vs speed for real-time results
- Designing outputs that are simple for users but powered by complex logic
- Each challenge forced tighter thinking and smarter system design, making the product stronger.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
AFS AI Development Program (India-wide): Got placed first out of India, applying real-world machine learning concepts directly into Ecoverse AI.
JKLU Ideathon: Secured 4th place out of 250+ teams, competing against nationwide participants by presenting Ecoverse AI as a practical, scalable solution for sustainable waste management.
What I learned
- AI is only powerful when it’s usable by non-technical users
- Sustainability tools must be instant and intuitive to actually change behavior
- Solving real problems beats flashy features every time
