Inspiration
A Carbon Footprint is the amount of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) released due to the consumption of fossil fuels by an individual or organization. Now imagine a world, where we could minimize Carbon Footprinting as much as possible when traveling. Our web app, EcoTrip, attempts to solve this issue through recommending eco-friendly living and traveling.
What it does
EcoTrip suggests sustainable travel options for people across the world. For example, with our application, users can search for green hotels with a particular vicinity or part of the world. Similarly, users can see the amount of CO2 that is emitted during a bus ride between locations on Earth.
How we built it
We first designed a basic prototype of the web app using a white board. Then, we charted out the implementable and feasible features. From here, we focused our energy on building the back end, which would connect the searched city for buses and hotels to the Google Map API. After verifying the functionality of the band, we built the front-end and styled the pages using React, HTML, and CSS.
What's next for EcoTrip
One of the main limitations of EcoTrip that we've quickly noticed was that the amount of travel options that the user when search eco-friendly traveling. Right now, users can only use buses as the only form of transportation to determine the amount of CO2 they could save. However, we would like to add other options, such as car, electric scooters, or trains, revealing the amount of emitted CO2 for these locations. Currently we simply access API data. In future implementations, we would expand to storing data on databases.
