Inspiration

Climate change is one of the most urgent challenges of our time, yet most people don’t know how their daily actions contribute to it. We wanted to build a tool that makes carbon awareness personal, actionable, and empowering—using AI to guide people toward greener habits.

What it does

EcoTrack AI is a smart web app that lets users log their daily carbon footprint from transport, energy, and food. It uses AI to generate personalized sustainability tips and helps users track their progress over time

How we built it

• Frontend: React.js with Tailwind CSS for a clean, responsive UI
• Backend: Node.js + Express for API handling
• Database: MongoDB for storing user data
• AI Integration: OpenAI GPT-4 API to generate personalized eco-tips
• Deployment (Planned): Netlify (frontend), Render (backend)

Challenges we ran into

• Integrating AI in a meaningful, personalized way
• Designing a simple yet effective UI for tracking emissions
• Managing asynchronous API calls and ensuring smooth backend/frontend communication
• Accidentally omitted the frontend code in the final build, causing the homepage to not load properly

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• Successfully built a working AI-powered sustainability coach
• Created a clean and intuitive carbon tracking system
• Designed the app to be modular and scalable for future features like gamification and blockchain integration

What we learned

• How to integrate AI into real-world applications
• The importance of user-centered design in climate tech
• How to manage full-stack development under time constraints
• The value of clear data visualization in behavior change

What's next for Ecotracker

• Add gamified eco-challenges and a community leaderboard
• Integrate blockchain to track and trade carbon credits
• Enable login and personalized dashboards
• Fix the frontend deployment issue and launch the full app publicly
