Inspiration

Our journey began with a simple yet profound question: How can we enhance the health and efficiency of cattle while reducing environmental impact? Inspired by the beautiful expanses of Canadian pastures and the hardworking farmers tending to their herds, we aimed to create a solution that bridges technology with traditional cattle grazing.

Our project

Our project is built around a wearable ear tag, meticulously designed to be non-invasive and durable. We integrated a low-power microcontroller, GPS module, and sensors, all powered by solar energy. Machine learning algorithms were developed to interpret sensor data and provide actionable insights. Moreover, all data are visualized and easy to access by a phone.

Tech

  • Microcontroller: Low-power, high-efficiency ARM Cortex
  • Sensors: GPS, accelerometer, and environmental sensors
  • Power: Solar panels
  • Connectivity: Cellular with fallback to Wi-Fi
  • Cloud: Data processing and analytics with Arduino Cloud Platform

Challenges

The biggest hurdles included designing a robust device that could withstand the rigors of outdoor grazing while ensuring consistent data transmission in remote areas with limited connectivity. Balancing the power budget to achieve frequent GPS location updates was also a complex task.

Moving Forward

With a successful prototype in hand, we're looking towards extensive field trials, further machine learning optimization, and exploring partnerships with cattle farmers and research institutions.

This project stands as a testament to innovation's power in advancing sustainable agriculture. Our commitment to this cause has only strengthened, and we are excited to see the impact our work will have on the industry.
