Inspiration Climate change is a global issue that needs local action. We were motivated by the need to make environmental efforts more engaging and connected within communities. Many people want to help the environment, but they often don't know how to begin or feel that their individual actions don't count. What it does EcoTrack is a mobile platform that makes environmental actions fun with points and rewards, connects neighbors for joint climate initiatives, shows the collective impact of communities using data visualization, offers personalized eco-friendly actions based on location and interests, and organizes neighborhood challenges and competitions. How we built it We created EcoTrack using React Native for mobile development across platforms, Node.js with the Express.js framework for the backend, MongoDB for storing user data and community metrics, Google Maps for location services and OpenWeatherMap for climate data APIs, and a custom dashboard for tracking impact analytics. Challenges we ran into We faced challenges such as integrating various environmental data sources, creating an engaging gamification system that encourages long-term behavior change, balancing privacy concerns with community features, and optimizing real-time impact tracking and visualization. Accomplishments that we're proud of We achieved several milestones, including implementing an effective point system that rewards different environmental actions, designing an intuitive user interface that makes sustainability easy for all ages, developing algorithms that calculate and display community environmental impact, and building a platform architecture that can scale to multiple communities. What we learned We learned the value of user-centered design in applications aimed at behavior change, how to effectively gather and present environmental impact data, the difficulties of creating community-oriented features while protecting user privacy, and technical skills in mobile development and real-time data processing. What's next for EcoTrack Next, we plan to partner with local environmental organizations, expand to include tracking of carbon footprints, implement AI-driven personalized recommendations, add a marketplace for local sustainable businesses, and scale to multiple cities with location-specific environmental challenges.
