Inspiration
The inspiration behind our project stems from a shared aspiration to actively contribute to resolving the ongoing environmental predicaments originating from human activities. Witnessing the ramifications of climate change, pollution, deforestation, and biodiversity loss, we recognized the imperative to address these issues at an individual level. Thus, ECOTRACK was conceived as a response to this urgency, aiming to empower individuals with the means to adopt sustainable practices. This initiative is driven by the belief that even the smallest individual actions, when aggregated, possess the potential to yield substantial positive outcomes. By fostering a greater awareness and encouraging purposeful choices, we envision our project playing a pivotal role in promoting a more harmonious relationship between humanity and the environment.
What it does
ECOTRACK is a website that was meticulously crafted to cultivate sustainable lifestyles and nurture environmental awareness. Its core functionality revolves around the evaluation of an individual's eco-friendliness, achieved through user input in response to a series of thoughtfully designed questions. This input encapsulates various aspects of daily life, ranging from transportation habits and energy consumption to waste management practices. The platform then generates tailored recommendations that resonate with each user's unique lifestyle and preferences. These suggestions serve as tangible steps toward reducing environmental impact, forming a bridge between personal actions and collective efforts to preserve our planet.
How we built it
For our hackathon project, we set out to create a sustainability tracker that empowers users to assess and improve their eco-friendly habits. Our project was built using a combination of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to deliver an intuitive and engaging user experience. To start off, we began by structuring the project using HTML to create the necessary elements and layout. We designed a user-friendly interface that showcased different elements for the pages. Along with this, we used CSS to create an aesthetic, user-friendly, and responsive design that aligned with the theme of sustainability and eco-friendliness. Lastly, the core functionality of our project was implemented using JavaScript, which was employed to randomize the selection of questions from our predefined question bank and calculate their sustainability score.
Challenges we ran into
During the initial stages, we navigated the challenge of generating and selecting ideas. The process of ideation required a balance between creativity and practicality. We faced the task of exploring various concepts, each with its own potential, and then deliberating on which one would best serve the objectives we had set. The challenge lay in evaluating the feasibility, impact, and alignment of each idea with our aspirations. Through thorough discussions and critical analysis, we eventually arrived at ECOTRACK as the most appropriate and impactful solution, reflecting our commitment to addressing environmental awareness and sustainability.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our achievements with ECOTRACK are a source of great pride for our team. Beyond the project's success as a whole, we are particularly pleased with our effective communication and collaboration. It's noteworthy that we had never met one another before, yet we spontaneously formed a team and successfully developed a functional solution. We believe that ECOTRACK holds the potential to evolve into a highly valuable community resource, which adds to our sense of fulfillment in overcoming challenges and creating something impactful through our joint efforts.
What we learned
Our weekend experience taught us some valuable lessons, and one of the standout takeaways was effective collaboration in high-pressure situations. We grasped the significance of adhering to best practices while working on a project with time constraints. What stood out was the development of trust among team members, allowing us to confidently rely on each other's contributions to complete our assigned tasks, while offering assistance whenever possible.
What's next for ECOTRACK
Looking ahead, ECOTRACK has exciting plans to make an even bigger impact. We're not just stopping here – we're building a community where people can come together to encourage and help each other along their green journey. This community will be a place to challenge each other, share ideas, stories, and successes, creating a united push for positive change.
Our next step involves creating a handy Chrome extension. This little tool will tag along with your online shopping adventures, keeping track of the carbon footprint of what you buy. It's all about giving you real-time info on the environmental impact of your choices, right when you need it.
And that's not all. We're aiming high – we want to make waves in the fashion world. Our goal is to team up with online shopping platforms, so when you're shopping for clothes, you'll get the scoop on how eco-friendly your choices are. This is especially important given the fast fashion issue, where rapid production and disposal of clothing contribute to environmental harm. By shining a light on the green side of fashion, we're hoping to inspire a new way of shopping that's kinder to the planet. Through these steps, ECOTRACK aims to spark a movement that reshapes how we shop and live, making sustainability the norm.
