Inspiration

Climate change remains one of the most urgent global challenges of our time. While governments and large corporations often dominate conversations around carbon reduction, individuals and small communities frequently lack accessible tools to measure their contributions to sustainability.

The inspiration behind EcoTrack came from a simple question:

“What if everyday eco-friendly actions could be easily tracked and visualized to motivate more people to live sustainably?”

Recognizing that many people already engage in activities such as recycling, tree planting, and using sustainable transportation, we envisioned a platform that quantifies these efforts and transforms them into meaningful environmental insights. Additionally, the opportunity to leverage MeDo, a prompt-driven application builder, inspired us to explore how AI can accelerate the development of impactful solutions.

What Problem Does EcoTrack Solve?

EcoTrack addresses the lack of simple and accessible tools for individuals to measure and visualize their environmental impact. Traditional carbon credit systems are often complex and designed for large organizations, leaving individuals excluded from meaningful participation.

EcoTrack empowers users to:

Log eco-friendly activities. Automatically calculate their carbon savings. Visualize their environmental impact through intuitive dashboards. Stay motivated through gamification and achievements.

How We Built the Project

  1. Conceptualization

The project initially started as a Micro-Carbon Credit Tracker aimed at enabling individuals to earn tradable carbon credits. However, considering the constraints of a hackathon and the capabilities of MeDo, we refined the concept into a more focused and achievable solution: EcoTrack – Personal Carbon Impact Logger.

  1. Leveraging MeDo

MeDo’s prompt-driven development allowed us to transform our idea into a fully functional application rapidly. The development process involved structured and iterative conversations with MeDo:

Defining the Application Scope: We described the core purpose, user roles, and essential features. Providing a Data Model: A clear schema for users, activities, and badges ensured accurate backend generation. Specifying Business Logic: Predefined emission factors enabled consistent carbon impact calculations. Designing User Interfaces: MeDo generated responsive pages, including dashboards and activity logging forms. Implementing Role-Based Access: The platform supports both User and Admin roles, with admins also capable of logging activities for flexibility.

  1. Carbon Impact Calculation

A key feature of EcoTrack is the automatic calculation of carbon savings using predefined emission factors. The fundamental formula used in the application is:

CO2 Saved (kg) = Quantity × Emission Factor CO2

Saved (kg)=Quantity×Emission Factor

Where the emission factor varies depending on the activity type.

Example Emission Factors Activity Unit Emission Factor (kg CO₂ per unit) Tree Planting Tree 21 Recycling (Plastic) kg 1.5 Cycling/Walking km 0.2 Energy Saving kWh 0.4 Example Calculation

If a user plants 5 trees, the carbon savings are calculated as:

5×21 = 105 kg CO2 This mathematical model ensures transparency and credibility in the platform’s environmental impact assessments.

Most Impressive Feature Generated by MeDo

The standout feature of EcoTrack is the Personal Impact Dashboard. MeDo seamlessly generated an intuitive interface that aggregates user activities and presents them through visually engaging analytics. Users can instantly view:

Total CO₂ saved. Number of activities logged. Activity breakdowns via charts. Achievement badges based on milestones.

This feature effectively transforms raw data into actionable insights, motivating users to continue sustainable practices.

What We Learned

  1. Power of Prompt-Driven Development

Working with MeDo demonstrated how AI can significantly accelerate software development. By providing clear and structured prompts, we were able to generate a robust application within a short timeframe.

  1. Importance of Simplicity

Our initial concept was ambitious, but simplifying the scope allowed us to deliver a polished and functional MVP, reinforcing the principle that clarity and focus are key to successful product development.

  1. Structured Data Modeling

Defining a well-organized data schema ensured that the generated application maintained consistency and scalability.

  1. Designing for Impact

We learned that technology can be a powerful tool for behavioral change, especially when it makes complex concepts like carbon emissions easy to understand.

Challenges We Faced

  1. Balancing Ambition with Feasibility

The original idea of a full micro-carbon credit marketplace proved too complex for the hackathon timeline. Refining the concept to a personal impact tracker allowed us to maintain the vision while ensuring successful execution.

  1. Structuring Effective Prompts

Since MeDo relies heavily on prompt quality, crafting clear and detailed instructions was essential. Iterative refinement was necessary to achieve the desired functionality.

  1. Standardizing Emission Factors

Selecting credible and simplified emission factors required research to ensure that the calculations remained both realistic and understandable for users.

  1. Role Management

MeDo implemented a dual-role system, allowing admins to log activities. Ensuring transparency in analytics required thoughtful consideration of how these contributions were represented.

Impact and Future Vision

EcoTrack demonstrates how AI-powered tools can democratize access to sustainability tracking. While the current version focuses on individual impact, future enhancements could include:

Integration with carbon credit marketplaces. Community and corporate sustainability programs. Partnerships with environmental organizations. Advanced analytics and ESG reporting. Conclusion

EcoTrack exemplifies how prompt-driven development can transform innovative ideas into real-world solutions within a short timeframe. By leveraging MeDo, we built a platform that empowers individuals to take measurable climate action and fosters greater environmental awareness.

Through this project, we not only developed a meaningful application but also gained valuable insights into the potential of AI-assisted software development to drive positive global change.
