Inspiration: From Fast-Fashion Despair to Circular Hope
Through research, we discovered fashion is one of the world's largest polluters, with 92 million tons of textile waste landfilled annually. Simultaneously, the average person wears only 20–30% of their wardrobe. We saw a painful gap between wanting to live sustainably and feeling powerless to change our own habits—especially on a budget.
The Weight of a $10 Hoodie
It was a Tuesday night during midterms. I sat on the floor, staring at a pile of clothes that had fallen apart after just three washes. My favourite "bargain" hoodie—a $10 fast-fashion buy—had a seam completely torn open, the fabric already pilling.
As a student, I counted every penny. I bought that hoodie because I wanted to look good, to fit in, and because it was all I could afford between rent and textbooks. But that night, the math stopped adding up. If I only paid $10, then someone else, somewhere else, was paying for the rest of it, with their safety, their health, and their dignity.
I felt trapped: too broke to buy quality, too conscious to keep buying trash.
Looking around at my roommates, I saw the same struggle. We all wanted to do better, but sustainability felt like a "rich person's hobby." It felt lonely. It felt like we were choosing between our ethics and our budget every single time we went to the mall.
🔁The Solution: ECOThread
We didn't need another shopping app. We needed a support system where sustainability isn't a luxury, but a creative, accessible, and communal practice. That’s when the idea for EcoThread-Loop was born. We realized that sustainability shouldn't be a sacrifice; it should be a connection. We didn't want to just "buy less," we also wanted to share more.
ECOThread is built on three pillars:
- 💡 AI-Powered Creativity – Give unworn clothes new life with styling inspiration, no new purchases required.
- 🛠️ Practical Repair Guidance – Learn to mend what you love, extending its life and your connection to it.
- 🔄 A Warm, Trusted Marketplace – Buy and sell pre-loved items in a community that values story over stigma.
We're not just building features; we're building empowerment, skill, and connection.
👥 Target Audience: The "Conscious But Constrained."
ECOThread is for everyone who has ever felt the tension between wanting to do good and having to make ends meet. Specifically:
- Students & Young Adults navigating tight budgets but deep values.
- Eco-Curious Individuals who are overwhelmed by where to start.
- Practical DIYers who want to repair but lack the know-how.
- Secondhand Shoppers seeking a better, more trustworthy experience.
We speak to the person looking at their closet and seeing potential, not just possessions.
🌍 The Impact: Changing Fashion's Footprint, One Garment at a Time
Our vision is a world where fashion is circular by default. ECOThread's impact is both personal and planetary:
- For the User: Saves money, builds skills, and creates a wardrobe filled with meaning instead of waste. Turns guilt into agency.
- For the Community: Fosters connection, reduces the stigma around secondhand, and makes sustainable living feel less lonely.
- For the Planet: Directly tackles textile waste by maximizing the use, repair, and reuse of every garment.
By focusing on love, repair, and circulation, we're not just reducing waste—we're rewriting the story of what fashion can be.

What it does
EcoThread-Loop (also known as "The Infinite Closet") is a gamified, peer-to-peer fashion exchange platform designed specifically for university students. It turns sustainability from a "chore" into a community trend.
- The Swap Loop: Instead of throwing away clothes, students upload items they no longer wear. Users can trade items directly with others on campus—swapping a "tired" piece for something "new to them" without spending a dime.
- Sustainability Checkpoints: The app gamifies the experience. Users earn "Eco-Points" for every item they rescue from a landfill. As you loop more items, you unlock checkpoints and badges, visualizing your impact on carbon reduction.
- Community Hub: It’s not just a marketplace; it’s a social network. You can see who on campus has a style similar to yours, building a community that values longevity over fast fashion.
How We Built It
We built EcoThread-Loop as a full-stack MERN application to ensure a smooth, modern user experience:
- Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and TypeScript in VSCode for a clean, user-friendly interface.
- Backend: Node.js with Express to handle API requests and connect features.
- Database: MongoDB to store user data, clothing info, AI sessions, listings, and repair guides—our first time using it. on features.
- Environment Management: We used
dotenvto secure our API keys and configuration, ensuring our app was secure from the start.
Challenges
- MongoDB Learning Curve: First time using it—struggled with backend-frontend connections and data modelling.
- The Restart: Realized our initial architecture wasn't scalable. Had to scrap and rebuild from scratch mid-project.
- Environment Issues: "Permission Denied" errors and confusion between
mongodandmongoshslowed us down.
Accomplishments
- Mastered New Tech: Successfully implemented MongoDB despite it being completely new to us.
- Built a Complete Platform: Created three integrated features (AI Styling, Care & Repair, Marketplace) that work together.
- Pivoted Successfully: Had the courage to restart and delivered a stronger product.
- Solved Real Problems: Built something we'd actually use as students wanting to be sustainable.
What We Learned
- Sleeping on Campus: It was our members' first time sleeping overnight on campus (and by sleep, we didn't actually sleep), but we had the best time of our lives!!!!
- Setbacks are part of the process: Restarting taught us more than pushing through a broken foundation.
- MongoDB: Got to learn and work with MongoDB in one night!
What's next for ECOthread
- AI Styling Assistant: We plan to integrate the Gemini API to analyze uploaded clothing images and automatically suggest "outfits" based on what is currently available in the Loop.
- Campus Drop-Zones: Partnering with student unions to create safe, physical locations for item drop-offs to increase safety and trust.
- Mobile App: Porting our React web app to React Native to give students a true on-the-go experience for finding their next favourite piece.
