Inspiration

We were inspired by the amazing way filter-feeding animals like whales and oysters clean water. They have these incredible natural filters that capture food while letting water flow through. We thought, "Why can't we do that for pools?" That's how we came up with the idea for EcoSwim, a pool filtration system that uses biomimicry to create a cleaner, healthier swimming experience.

What it does

EcoSwim elevates pool care by seamlessly integrating a bio-inspired, multi-stage filtration system directly into your pool's drainage. It mimics nature's brilliance to deliver a cleaner, healthier swimming experience while minimizing environmental impact. Our system targets contaminants with remarkable precision, reducing reliance on harsh chemicals and conserving water. With EcoSwim, you can dive into a pool that feels as refreshing as nature intended.

How we built it

Our journey began with a deep dive into the fascinating world of filter-feeding organisms. We were awestruck by the baleen whale's ability to sieve massive volumes of water, capturing tiny krill with its comb-like baleen plates. This inspired our first filtration stage, a mycelium sponge that acts as a pre-filter, absorbing excess water and trapping denser contaminants.

Next, we marveled at the oyster's elegant gills, which capture microscopic particles with remarkable efficiency. This led us to create a two-stage filtration system using a coarse, recycled stainless steel mesh, followed by a fine, natural bamboo mesh, to mimic the oyster's meticulous filtration.

Our prototype, lovingly crafted from sustainable fabrics and cardboard scavenged from our school's art room, brought our vision to life. It was a testament to our commitment to eco-friendly design and a tangible representation of the final product, which will be built from plant-based, biodegradable plastics.

Challenges we ran into

Innovation is rarely a smooth voyage. We encountered choppy waters when trying to find the perfect balance between filtration efficiency and flow rate. Selecting sustainable materials for each filter layer that could withstand the pool environment also proved to be a formidable task. Furthermore, we grappled with the challenge of making EcoSwim stand out in a market saturated with traditional pool filtration systems.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Despite the storms, we navigated through the challenges and emerged with a design that truly embodies biomimicry and sustainability. We're immensely proud of crafting a system that not only cleans pool water effectively but also minimizes environmental impact. We're also thrilled to have developed a prototype that showcases our vision in a tangible and inspiring way.
