Inspiration

We were inspired by viral trading challenges—particularly the famous 'Trading a Paperclip for a House' concept. Our goal was to harness the power of local communities and sustainability to create an app that encourages swapping items easily and securely, benefiting both users and the environment.

What it does

EcoSwap allows users to effortlessly list items they no longer need and exchange them within their local community. With built-in gamification features like Trust Scores and Community Points, EcoSwap promotes sustainable living, community trust, and engagement through rewarding swaps.

How we built it

We developed EcoSwap using Flask, Python, and SQLAlchemy for backend infrastructure and HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for a responsive and user-friendly frontend. We implemented geographic-based item matching and leveraged external APIs for location services, ensuring personalized and localized experiences. Gamification features were integrated to enhance user interaction and community involvement.

Challenges we ran into

We wasted a lot of time trying to decide on a project idea. We initially wanted to do a project with a Free Wili device, however due to various issues and a lack of feasible project ideas, we decided to shift our focus to EcoSwap instead. During this time, we lost valuable time that could've been more efficiently used had we decided on a project sooner.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our perserverance. We struggled initially with the FREE-WiLi hardware setup, so we quickly shifted gears and developed a sleek-looking web app on the fly.

What we learned

Throughout the project, we learned about effective geolocation algorithms, the importance of user-centric design, and robust data modeling. We also gained valuable insights into balancing gamification elements with practicality to enhance user retention and satisfaction.

What's next for EcoSwap

Moving forward, we plan to implement advanced AI-driven matching algorithms to suggest optimal swaps for users, introduce mobile apps for broader accessibility, and enhance security features further. We aim to grow EcoSwap into a widely-adopted platform that significantly impacts sustainability and community sharing practices globally.
