EcoSwap

Inspiration

As consumers, we play a major role in supporting sustainability across multiple industries. That's why EcoSwap was built: to ensure that consumers can contribute to their environment while shopping.

What it does

EcoSwap takes user's inputs, analyzes there negative impact on the environment, and suggests alternatives that are safer for the environment and reduce carbon footprints. EcoSwap allows users to conveniently find better alternatives, and it is an easy way to go green!

How we built it

The project began with research on environmentally-harmful yet commonly used objects. Soon, we discovered sustainable alternatives and began coding using Python. We used tKinter to develop our project, which was coded entirely on Replit. We used Repl because of its collaborative aspect- it was easy for multiple people to use at the same time. This enabled us to share ideas and code with each other.

Challenges we ran into

At first, we began with a large Spreadsheet, converted into a CSV file. However, this was difficult to read, so we simplified it continuously until we were able to develop a coherent system that was easy to code and use. Furthermore, we encountered some issues with the tKinter system. As beginner coders, we used tutorials to decipher these problems.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the impact that this app could have. Most importantly, however, is the fact that we have learned a lot along the way. In fact, we were able to use internet resources and learned to work with programs like Tkinter and many more. We are proud of the journey that this hackathon took us on.

What we learned

During this hackathon, we learned to use Tkinter and work together. However, we also learned many valuable lessons through the workshops we attended like: Intro to Python, Web Development, and C. These learning opportunities helped us with our project, and allowed us to familiarize ourselves with various software and languages.

What's next for EcoSwap

EcoSwap has the potential of being a major tool that accompanies everyone to the grocery store. It empowers individuals and reinforces the notion that ANYONE can make a difference in their environment. EcoSwap can expand its featured options, and also, companies can advertise their sustainable products to incentivize users to go green.
