Inspiration
We were largely inspired by the Wahoo Swap club at UVA. The club usually holds events where a large amount of people bring clothes and swap them. We thought that this idea was good for sustainability because of the problems that arise from fast fashion. We were also inspired by apps like Depop where people sell their own clothes.
What it does
Ecoswap is an online website where you can upload your own clothes or shoes to then try and trade with other people. It is sort of like Depop in that you upload your own clothing to give out. It is, however, a website that looks for people nearby. So instead of having to ship the item to the customer you can simply meet up (more like Facebook Marketplace).
How we built it
We used Visual Studio Code and adjusted some free html templates that we found online.
Challenges we ran into
Neither of us had any prior experience with HTML, Javascript, or CSS, so we had to spend a good amount of the time learning the very basics of HTML. We were also originally going to make an app with a similar idea, but we discovered that the amount of time it takes to learn how to and actually make an app will take much more time than we had today. We had originally wanted to make an app to try and see if we could use the coding languages that we have prior experiences with. However, we decided it would be easier to just try and learn HTML after speaking to a mentor.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We learned the basics of HTML and a very little amount of CSS. The website is functional.
What we learned
We learned HTML. We also learned to try and choose projects that are possible instead of trying to commit to a giant, complicated project.
What's next for EcoSwap
We are aiming to try and figure out how to create an app and move Ecoswap from an online website to a mobile app.
