Inspiration
Electricity is one of the largest operational expenses for businesses, yet many companies only realize excessive energy consumption after receiving their monthly electricity bill. Existing solutions often focus on displaying usage data but provide limited support in helping facility managers identify inefficient energy usage and take meaningful action. This inspired us to create EcoStream, a platform that transforms electricity data into actionable insights, enabling businesses to monitor consumption, detect abnormalities, and improve energy efficiency.
What it does
EcoStream is a smart electricity management platform designed for businesses. It provides a centralized dashboard where users can monitor electricity consumption, analyze energy trends, detect abnormal usage, and manage energy alerts.
Key features include: EcoStream is a smart electricity management platform designed for businesses to monitor energy consumption, identify abnormal electricity usage, and improve operational efficiency. The platform provides a centralized dashboard that displays key metrics such as total energy consumption, average usage, active alerts, and monitoring records, alongside interactive charts that visualize consumption trends over time. Users can explore detailed energy analytics, monitor buildings and departments through the Energy Control Centre, resolve high-energy alerts by simulating energy-saving actions, and review comprehensive monitoring logs containing electricity data such as consumption, voltage, current, and system status. To support reporting and decision-making, EcoStream also allows users to export monitoring records to Excel, while simulated real-time data demonstrates how the platform would operate in a real business environment.
How we built it
We developed EcoStream as a web application using php, CSS, and JavaScript. The interface was designed with a clean dashboard layout to provide an intuitive user experience for facility managers. Since this is a hackathon prototype, we implemented simulated real-time electricity data to demonstrate how the platform would function in a real business environment. Interactive charts, monitoring logs, alerts, and analytics were integrated to create a complete electricity management workflow.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was designing a solution that was both realistic and achievable within the hackathon timeframe. We initially explored controlling electrical devices directly through the website but realized that real implementations require IoT hardware or Building Management Systems. Instead, we developed a realistic simulation that demonstrates how EcoStream could integrate with existing smart building infrastructure in the future. Another challenge was presenting complex electricity data in a way that is easy for users to understand and act upon.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating a complete end-to-end electricity management platform rather than a simple monitoring dashboard. EcoStream combines monitoring, analytics, alerts, centralized building management, and reporting into one integrated solution. We also designed an intuitive interface that helps users quickly identify abnormal electricity usage and understand the impact of energy-saving actions.
What we learned
Throughout this project, we gained a deeper understanding of energy management, dashboard design, data visualization, and user-centered development. We also learned the importance of balancing technical feasibility with user needs and designing solutions that solve real operational challenges instead of simply displaying data.
What's next for Ecostream
In the future, we plan to integrate EcoStream with smart meters, IoT devices, and Building Management Systems to enable real-time monitoring and automated energy control. We also aim to incorporate machine learning to predict abnormal electricity consumption, recommend energy optimization strategies, and generate more personalized insights for businesses. Ultimately, we envision EcoStream becoming a comprehensive energy management platform that helps organizations reduce costs while achieving their sustainability goals.
