Inspiration
We noticed how Unlock the hidden potential of making travel fun and unique to change the Philly environment.
What it does
You place your travel destination and mode of transportation that is meant to replace using a gas car to commute through incentive and gamification of "cleaner" modes of transport.
The user places their destination and mode of transport, which results in an amount of points based on the mode selected that the user can redeem for rewards.
The app has in built in barriers to prevent abuse of points through speed measurement and the use of receipts.
How we built it
We used Firebase as our DB, whilst using react native, Typescript, and outside APIs to make the app run seamlessly.
Challenges we ran into
When using the simulator the data wouldn't reset which wouldn't allow us to test with new data until we noticed the problem that we needed to reset the IOS simulator.
The main problem was figuring out how to prevent the abuse of someone just pressing walk and then taking the train and or bike which is less points.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Embedding a map
Our ability to detect problems and debug.
What we learned
Teamwork, incorporating 5 different people's skills and dividing the work was a challenge at the start. Though we decided to sit down and talk for hours which made the rest easy.
We learned good planning and the diversity of our ideas was immensely powerful in making our project
What's next for Ecosteps
An idea we had is if this was a part of a map service app like Google maps. Where when someone plans to go somewhere, Google could show the points for each mode.
Then the commuter wins through getting points and redeeming them, the community wins in terms of environmental benefits and traffic reduction, and companies with the discounts can get users using their service more and more, and see through data what people choose.
