Inspiration
The increasing demand for environmentally friendly waste management solutions in the PPE sector was the impetus for EcoSort. We developed a method that uses technology to optimize recycling procedures and reduce environmental effects after seeing the difficulties Ansell's RightCycle program encountered: contamination and waste segregation inefficiencies.
What it does
EcoSort is a clever waste management solution that uses machine intelligence and IoT-enabled collection bins to improve PPE recycling. The system scans and sorts PPE items by brand and material type in real-time. While gathering useful information on contamination trends, it reduces the risk of contamination and gives workers prompt feedback via intelligent notifications.
How we built it
Conducted Research: Analyzed existing waste management practices and identified key pain points.
Designed the Architecture: Outlined system components, including IoT devices and a machine learning model for image recognition.
Created a User Interface: Designed an interactive dashboard that provides immediate feedback and displays contamination trends.
Challenges we ran into
Technical Integration: Ensuring smooth communication between IoT devices and the machine learning model was a significant challenge.
Data Collection: Obtaining enough data to train the ML model effectively required innovative solutions to simulate various PPE types.
User Adoption: Encouraging effective usage of the system by employees demanded a focus on user experience and comprehensive training.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
-Successfully developed a prototype that accurately identifies and sorts PPE. -Achieved a significant reduction in contamination levels during testing. -Created a user-friendly interface that employees found easy to navigate. -Gathered valuable insights from the data collected, informing future improvements.
What we learned
-Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Working with various experts enhanced our approach to both the technical and user-centric aspects.
-Agile Development: Iterative testing and feedback improved the functionality and usability of EcoSort.
-Sustainability Impact: Understanding the potential environmental benefits of effective waste management reinforced our commitment to sustainability.
What's next for EcoSort
Moving forward, we aim to:
Refine and scale the EcoSort system for broader implementation within the PPE industry. Explore partnerships with Ansell and other companies to enhance recycling efforts across multiple brands. Investigate additional features, such as integration with waste management services and advanced analytics for improved decision-making.
