Inspiration
We were inspired to build this project because we noticed that people in our community do not put items being thrown away into the correct bins. They do this because they are not completely sure which bin their trash belongs in, and are not aware of the environmental impacts of their actions. We wanted to build something that would educate others about what is compostable and recyclable in a fun way.
What it does
Our project is a website that is full of fun interactive activities to educate people on what should go into the compost, recycling bin, or the landfill. The website has a video that gives an overview on the environmental problems caused by incorrectly sorting trash. There is an interactive game which allows the player to practice sorting different items into the correct bin. Under that, there is a random environmental fact generator to make the site more engaging. Finally, there is a feature where you can place an object in front of your device camera and it will identify if it is likely compostable or recyclable.
How we built it
We used scratch for the game and for the informational instructional video and then embedded it onto the site with HTML. We also used teachable machine to create an app that tells you if the item you are throwing away is compostable, recyclable, or landfill trash. Overall, we used html, javascript, and html to create the website and we built the website on CodeSandbox.
Challenges we ran into
It was really hard for us to combine java script, html, python, and css into a website, so we made a lot of mistakes. It was also very time consuming to work on each piece of code because all of them were deeply integrated and combined.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are really proud that we were able to collaborate clearly and effectively with each other. We were able to combine all of our strengths with the different coding languages and make something impactful.
What we learned
We learned how to combine different coding languages and platforms into one website.
What's next for EcoSort
We are hoping to advance our game with new levels and make it more user-friendly. We could also add more content to the website to help others understand the consequences of their actions.
