Inspiration
EcoSort started with a simple but common frustration where even people who want to recycle often don’t know how, because waste-sorting rules differ from place to place and the information is rarely clear or accessible. This confusion causes recyclable items to end up in landfills, not due to lack of care, but because the process itself feels overwhelming and uncertain.
What it does
EcoSort helps users make confident disposal decisions by allowing them to scan or search for everyday items and instantly receive clear guidance on how to dispose of them correctly, based on global and local waste rules, all within a simple and friendly interface.
How we built it
We built EcoSort by combining AI-powered item classification with a structured disposal rules system, wrapped in a clean and intuitive user interface designed to prioritize clarity, speed, and ease of use for everyday scenarios.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was handling the complexity of different regional waste rules while keeping the experience simple and not overwhelming users with excessive information or technical details.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud that EcoSort transforms a complex environmental problem into an accessible and engaging experience, encouraging sustainable habits through clear guidance, rewards, and progress tracking. It also enables user to easily scan using their camera to detect the items that they are willing to dispose properly.
What we learned
Through building EcoSort, we learned that sustainability tools are most effective when they reduce friction and empower users with confidence, showing that thoughtful UX can drive meaningful behavior change.
What's next for EcoSort
Next, we plan to expand coverage for local disposal rules, improve scanning accuracy, and introduce stronger community and gamification features to help users stay engaged and committed to a zero-waste lifestyle.
