Inspiration
Sometimes, we have some trouble figuring out which bin to throw our garbage in. This inspired us to create an application that would help determine which bin to throw our garbage in. Additionally, we were interested in using the Gemini API to create a project which created a perfect scenario for creating this garbage sorting AI.
What it does
When you're confused on which bin to throw your garbage in, you can submit a photo of your garbage and our application's usage of the Gemini API will determine the best bin to throw it in!
How we built it
Using Gemini AI to assist our construction of our website, we programmed this application using various languages including Python, HTML, and JavaScript. The program we built this project with was Visual Studio Code.
Challenges we ran into
As a group of friends with little programming experience in terms of software design, we had many troubles with figuring out how to start coding the project. However with the use of Google Gemini AI, we were able to learn more about software development and were able to construct a basic demonstration of our vision.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to say that we were able to build a aesthetically pleasing and functional application that solves a common problem of waste management confusion which will hopefully make it easier to sort waste.
What we learned
Much of the learning that we took away from this project came from learning how to use the Gemini API to create an interesting project. Learning about this API allowed us to both create this project and inspired us with many ideas about how to used Gemini for our project.
What's next for our project?
We had plans to include more interactive visuals to help with differentiation between different types of garbage, but unfortunately we ran out of time. In the future we hope to incorporate these visuals to better help people sort through their waste.
