Inspiration

The inspiration behind EcoSort AI came from the growing problem of improper waste disposal and low recycling rates. Many people want to recycle responsibly but are often unsure about the correct waste category for everyday items. As a result, recyclable materials frequently end up in landfills, causing environmental pollution and wasting valuable resources.

We wanted to build a simple AI-powered solution that makes waste segregation easy for everyone. By combining computer vision with artificial intelligence, EcoSort AI enables users to identify waste instantly by uploading an image and receiving accurate classification along with recycling guidance.

What it does

EcoSort AI is an AI-powered smart waste management application that helps users identify and classify waste by simply uploading an image. The system uses a trained computer vision model to recognize different types of waste, including Plastic, Paper, Glass, Metal, Organic, and E-Waste.

After analyzing the image, the application instantly displays the predicted waste category along with the confidence score and provides recommendations for proper disposal or recycling. This helps users make informed decisions about waste segregation and reduces the chances of recyclable materials ending up in landfills.

How we built it

We built EcoSort AI by combining artificial intelligence with a simple and user-friendly web application.

First, we collected and organized a dataset of waste images representing categories such as Plastic, Paper, Glass, Metal, Organic, and E-Waste. The images were preprocessed and used to train a deep learning image classification model capable of recognizing different types of waste.

The trained AI model was integrated into a web application where users can upload an image of a waste item. The application processes the image, runs it through the AI model, and predicts the waste category in real time. Based on the prediction, the system displays the correct waste classification, confidence score, and recycling or disposal recommendations.

Challenges we ran into

Developing EcoSort AI came with several technical and practical challenges. One of the biggest difficulties was finding a diverse and well-labeled dataset of waste images, as different lighting conditions, camera angles, and backgrounds can affect the accuracy of image classification.

Another challenge was improving the AI model's performance for visually similar waste categories, such as plastic and glass or paper and cardboard. We addressed this by preprocessing the images, experimenting with different training techniques, and fine-tuning the model to improve its accuracy.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a working AI model capable of classifying multiple types of waste from images. Delivered real-time predictions with recycling and disposal recommendations. Created an intuitive interface that anyone can use without technical knowledge. Combined artificial intelligence, computer vision, and web development into a complete end-to-end solution. Raised awareness about sustainable waste management and encouraged responsible recycling practices.

What we learned

Building EcoSort AI was a valuable learning experience that strengthened both our technical and teamwork skills. We gained practical knowledge in developing an AI-powered application from start to finish, including data collection, image preprocessing, model training, testing, and deployment.

Throughout the project, we learned how computer vision and deep learning can be applied to solve real-world environmental challenges. We also improved our understanding of integrating an AI model with a web application to deliver fast and user-friendly predictions.

What's next for EcoSort AI

The next step for EcoSort AI is to transform it into a comprehensive smart waste management platform that serves individuals, businesses, educational institutions, and local communities. We plan to improve the AI model by increasing its accuracy and expanding the range of waste categories it can identify. In the future, we aim to launch a mobile application that allows users to classify waste instantly using their smartphone cameras. We also plan to add multilingual support, personalized recycling tips, and location-based services that help users find nearby recycling centers and e-waste collection points. Additionally, we hope to integrate IoT-enabled smart bins for automated waste monitoring and provide analytics dashboards for organizations and municipalities to track recycling efforts. Our long-term vision is to make EcoSort AI a reliable, AI-powered solution that encourages responsible waste disposal, improves recycling efficiency, reduces environmental pollution, and contributes to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
