Inspiration
🌱 Inspiration In today’s world, environmental awareness is rising, yet many people still struggle to understand how to properly dispose of waste. Whether it’s plastic, metal, glass, or e-waste, improper disposal harms the environment and public health.
The inspiration behind EcoSnap came from observing how often people unknowingly toss recyclable or hazardous materials into the wrong bins—or worse, litter them. We thought: What if a camera could guide users toward smarter, greener choices?
With the power of AI and location technology, we envisioned an app that makes sustainable living simple and accessible for everyone. Whether you're at home, on the street, or traveling, EcoSnap empowers you to take eco-friendly actions in just a snap.
What it does
EcoSnap is an AI-powered mobile app that helps users identify different types of waste using their phone camera. Simply snap a photo of an item—plastic, metal, paper, or even e-waste—and the app will recognize it and provide eco-friendly disposal or recycling suggestions. It also allows users to locate nearby recycling centers using Google Maps, making responsible waste management more accessible and efficient.
How we built it
Frontend & Backend: Built entirely using Bolt.new, which allowed us to develop and deploy a full-stack mobile app rapidly. Image Recognition: Integrated Google Cloud Vision API to analyze and classify waste items from user-uploaded images. Maps Integration: Used Google Maps API to display nearby recycling and disposal locations based on user’s GPS coordinates. Firebase: Utilized for storing user data and enabling scalable backend support. Design: Focused on a simple, intuitive UI with clean navigation for all age groups.
Challenges we ran into
Learning the Bolt.new environment and working within its limitations for building native mobile features. Integrating Google Vision API with image uploads and interpreting the results accurately. Handling permissions for camera and location access within a low-code platform. Designing a user flow that’s both simple and informative for diverse users.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a fully functional, visually appealing, and impact-driven app within the hackathon timeframe. Successfully integrated AI and location-based services in a mobile app with minimal code. Created a project that promotes sustainability and real-world impact. Improved performance and responsiveness of the app on both desktop and mobile views.
What we learned
How to rapidly prototype and deploy using Bolt.new. Connecting third-party APIs like Google Maps and Vision effectively. The importance of UX/UI in eco-focused applications, especially when educating users. Gained deeper insight into waste categorization and environmental impact.
What's next for EcoSnap
Adding user profiles with impact tracking (e.g., how many items properly recycled). Introducing gamification to encourage consistent eco-friendly behavior. Expanding to support more waste categories and local recycling policies. Enabling offline scanning and multi-language support for accessibility. Building a community feature where users can share sustainable habits and tips.
