Inspiration
Singapore’s Green Plan 2030 inspired us to create EcoScan. We realized that while many people want to recycle and live sustainably, they often lack clear, accessible information about product recyclability and convenient ways to dispose of waste properly. This gap motivated us to build a solution that makes sustainability practical and engaging for everyone.
What it does
EcoScan is a web-based platform that empowers users to: Scan items to check recyclability and get a sustainability score. Locate recycling and e-waste bins using an interactive map with filters and distance indicators. Report issues like overflowing bins with photo evidence and location tagging. Access daily eco tips, personalized sustainability reports, and multilingual support (English, Mandarin, Malay, Tamil). Engage through gamified features and community-driven resources.
How we built it
Development Environment: Built on Replit for collaborative coding and rapid deployment. Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript for a responsive interface. Backend: Node.js for data handling and logic. Map Integration: APIs for bin locations and distance calculation. Report Feature: Form with photo upload and location tagging. Multilingual Support: Language toggles for inclusivity. AI Integration: Used AI for generating sustainability tips and assisting in content creation. Sustainability Score Formula: $$Score=wr×R+wc×(1−C)+wp×(1−P)\text{Score} = w_r \times R + w_c \times (1 - C) + w_p \times (1 - P)Score=wr×R+wc×(1−C)+wp×(1−P)$$ Where RRR = recyclability, CCC = carbon footprint, PPP = packaging impact.
Challenges we ran into
Ensuring accurate sustainability scoring. Implementing real-time location services for bin finder. Designing a UI that balances simplicity and feature richness. Managing time constraints to deliver multiple features within the hackathon.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a functional prototype with scanning, locating and reporting features. Integrated multilingual support for Singapore’s diverse population. Created an interactive map for bin locations with filters. Developed a reporting system with photo evidence to improve recycling infrastructure.
What we learned
How to combine geolocation services with sustainability goals. Importance of UI/UX design for user engagement. Implementing gamification to encourage long-term eco-friendly habits. Leveraging AI tools for faster development and content generation. Working collaboratively under tight deadlines.
What's next for Ecoscan
Launch a mobile app for real-time scanning and location services. Integrate with retail systems for product sustainability data. Add AI-powered recommendations for greener alternatives. Partner with government agencies and recycling companies to scale impact.
