Eco Scan

Inspiration

Eco Scan was inspired by how hard it is for consumers to understand the environmental impact of their everyday products. People want to make sustainable choices, but the data is often hidden or confusing. We wanted to make sustainability tangible, visible, and actionable.

What it does

Eco Scan allows users to upload a photo of any product, and our AI instantly analyzes its environmental footprint, including carbon emissions, water usage, and waste. Users receive clear, actionable insights to make smarter, more sustainable decisions.

How we built it

  1. Collected a large dataset of products with associated environmental metrics.
  2. Trained a computer vision model to recognize products from images.
  3. Developed algorithms to compute the total footprint
  4. Designed an intuitive interface for effortless interaction.

Challenges we ran into

  • Data availability: Environmental data is fragmented and inconsistent.
  • Model accuracy: Recognizing products from diverse images was difficult.
  • Simplifying complexity: Conveying multi-dimensional environmental metrics in a single, digestible score required multiple design iterations.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully created an AI that can analyze almost any product from a single photo.
  • Built a user-friendly interface that makes sustainability understandable at a glance.
  • Empowered users to make actionable, eco-friendly choices.

What we learned

  • The importance of accuracy and transparency for building user trust.
  • How to combine computer vision with environmental databases effectively.
  • Effective ways to present complex data in a simple, actionable format.

What's next for EcoScan

  • Expand the database to include more products and regions.
  • Improve AI recognition for rare or international products.
  • Introduce personalized recommendations for sustainable alternatives.
  • Develop a mobile app for on-the-go impact analysis.
