Inspiration
AI is becoming part of almost everything we do, but using AI has a computational cost. We noticed that people often send AI requests without stopping to ask a simple question: “Do I actually need AI for this?”
At the same time, even when AI is useful, prompts can be unnecessarily long, repetitive, or poorly structured, leading to inefficient generations.
That led us to build EcoRoute — a decision and optimization layer that helps people use AI more intentionally.
Our philosophy is simple:
Don’t optimize unnecessary AI. Prevent it where possible. Optimize it when necessary.
What We Built
EcoRoute sits between the user and AI to help them make better decisions before generating.
A request goes through several stages:
Decide → Optimize → Right-Size → Evaluate
- AI Necessity Check: Determines whether AI is actually needed, optional, or justified for the task.
- Prompt Optimizer: Removes unnecessary repetition, filler, ambiguity, and conflicting instructions while preserving important context.
- Model Recommender: Suggests a model based on the task rather than defaulting to the largest model.
- Generation Risk Analysis: Identifies risks such as repetition, output bloat, and potential regeneration.
- Green Score: Provides an estimated efficiency/impact signal to encourage more intentional AI use.
- Voice-to-Intent: Lets users speak a request and routes it through the same analysis pipeline.
- Browser Extension: Extends the concept beyond our workspace so users can receive guidance while interacting with AI tools.
EcoRoute is not anti-AI. It is about making AI use more deliberate: use AI when it adds value, and use it efficiently when it does.
How We Built It
We built the frontend as a modern React application and developed a FastAPI backend to handle analysis and optimization.
The backend combines rule-based analysis with language-model capabilities to classify requests, improve prompts, recommend appropriate models, and identify generation risks.
We also built the product around a shared analysis pipeline so that features such as the workspace, voice input, and browser extension follow the same core logic instead of becoming separate systems.
What We Learned
One of our biggest learnings was that optimization doesn't simply mean making a prompt shorter.
A good optimizer needs to understand what information is important and preserve the user's intent. For larger prompts, that can mean consolidating repeated instructions, removing filler, resolving conflicts, and restructuring information rather than blindly deleting text.
We also learned how much work goes into taking a prototype beyond functionality. Deployment, API communication, CORS, environment configuration, browser-extension integration, and frontend-backend coordination all became part of the development process.
Most importantly, we learned to think about AI not just as something that generates an answer, but as something that should be used intentionally.
Challenges We Faced
One of our biggest challenges was connecting our locally developed application to a production environment.
We encountered issues involving API URLs, deployment configuration, CORS preflight requests, and differences between local and deployed environments. Debugging these issues required tracing requests from the browser all the way to the backend and understanding what was actually happening rather than relying only on the frontend error message.
Another challenge was making the prompt optimizer genuinely useful instead of simply paraphrasing a user's prompt. We had to design it to distinguish between short vague requests, already-efficient prompts, and large prompts containing repetition or unnecessary instructions.
What's Next
We see EcoRoute as more than a standalone AI workspace.
Our long-term goal is to make intentional AI usage a normal part of interacting with AI, whether someone is using a chatbot, an AI-powered website, or another AI tool.
Instead of asking only:
“What can AI do for me?”
EcoRoute encourages users to first ask:
“Is AI the right tool for this?”
And when it is, “How can I use it efficiently?”
EcoRoute — Think before you generate.
