🌱 EcoRoute AI — Intelligent Last-Mile Delivery

💡 Inspiration

Last-mile delivery is an essential part of modern life, but inefficient routes can increase delivery costs, waste time, and contribute to carbon emissions. We wanted to explore how technology and intelligent route planning could help make deliveries more efficient and environmentally responsible.

That inspired us to build EcoRoute AI, a sustainability-focused logistics platform designed to bring route planning, fleet management, and emissions estimation together in one place.

Our vision is simple: Smarter Deliveries. Greener Cities.

🚀 What It Does

EcoRoute AI is a web application designed to help delivery businesses understand and improve their delivery operations.

Its core features include:

  • Route Planner: Helps users plan delivery journeys and explore more efficient routes.
  • Fleet Management: Organizes vehicle information, availability, and delivery assignments.
  • Emissions Calculator: Estimates CO₂ emissions based on distance and a configurable emission factor.
  • Route Comparison: Compares available routes using distance, estimated time, and environmental impact.
  • Analytics Dashboard: Presents delivery and fleet information in an accessible interface.

The goal is to help businesses make better-informed logistics decisions while considering both operational efficiency and sustainability.

🛠️ How We Built It

We developed EcoRoute AI as a web application and published the frontend using Netlify. We also created a separate project presentation website using Google Sites and connected it to the application.

The application was designed around a modular dashboard with dedicated sections for route planning, fleet management, route comparison, and emissions tracking.

We focused on creating an accessible interface that makes logistics information easier to understand and demonstrates how software can support more sustainable delivery decisions.

Our planned cloud architecture uses Amazon Web Services (AWS) for backend functionality, data storage, authentication, and mapping integrations. These integrations require configuration and testing before they can be considered operational.

🧠 Challenges We Faced

One of our biggest challenges was turning an idea into a published application while working with limited resources.

We encountered development and deployment difficulties, including build errors, hosting configuration, and limitations in AI development tools. We also had to distinguish between features that could work immediately and those that require external APIs, credentials, or backend infrastructure.

Working through these challenges helped us understand the importance of testing, deployment, secure configuration, and clearly identifying the limitations of a prototype.

📚 What We Learned

Through this project, we explored:

  • Web application development and deployment.
  • Designing interactive dashboards for real-world problems.
  • Route planning and emissions estimation concepts.
  • The role cloud infrastructure can play in scalable applications.
  • The importance of validating calculations and distinguishing estimated results from real-world measurements.
  • How to communicate a technical idea through a clear user interface and project presentation.

We also learned that a published interface is only one part of a complete product: reliable data storage, secure backend services, and tested integrations are equally important.

🌍 Future Scope

Our next goals are to strengthen the application with verified route optimization, persistent cloud storage, secure authentication, and real mapping integrations.

We also aim to explore AWS services such as Amazon API Gateway, AWS Lambda, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon Cognito, and Amazon Location Service where appropriate and feasible.

Future versions could support real-time vehicle tracking, delivery notifications, more detailed fleet analytics, and improved emissions comparisons.

🎯 Our Mission

EcoRoute AI aims to demonstrate how intelligent software and cloud technology can help make last-mile logistics more efficient and environmentally conscious.
