EcoRoute.AI — Greener Navigation for a Healthier Planet Inspiration Our journey began with a simple yet powerful question: How can we help people make more environmentally friendly travel choices? With rising concerns about climate change and urban pollution, we wanted to create a tool that not only helps users find routes but guides them towards greener, more sustainable travel options. Inspired by the potential of AI and mapping technologies, EcoRoute.AI was born to empower everyday travelers to reduce their carbon footprint effortlessly.

What It Does EcoRoute.AI simulates eco-friendly route recommendations, helping users visualize greener paths between their chosen destinations. It calculates a simulated “eco score” based on factors like distance, elevation, and traffic — highlighting routes that minimize carbon emissions. The app dynamically colors routes from green to red, indicating their environmental impact. This intuitive visual feedback encourages users to choose sustainable travel routes without needing complicated tools or access to costly APIs.

How We Built It To keep the project accessible and free from the constraints of API keys, we harnessed the power of Leaflet.js, an open-source mapping library. We built a sleek, interactive interface allowing users to enter origin and destination points and visualize the greenest route. Our “AI-powered” eco-score is a smart simulator combining distance, traffic, and elevation factors to estimate emissions. The entire app runs client-side, making it lightweight and easy to deploy.

Challenges We Ran Into Building an eco-routing tool without direct access to real-time traffic, elevation, or pollution APIs was a challenge. We had to simulate data realistically to create meaningful eco-scores and route visualizations. Balancing simplicity and accuracy in the scoring model required iteration and careful tuning. Additionally, working within browser constraints meant optimizing performance while still delivering a smooth, engaging user experience.

Accomplishments We're Proud Of Despite limited data inputs, we successfully created an app that educates users about the environmental impact of their routes in an intuitive and visually appealing way. The dynamic color-coded routing and AI-simulated eco-scores provide an engaging experience that can inspire more sustainable travel choices. We also deployed the app effortlessly on Netlify, making it accessible worldwide without complex backend infrastructure.

What We Learned This project deepened our understanding of mapping technologies, route calculation, and the challenges of sustainability-focused software. We learned the importance of creative problem-solving when real-world data is limited, and how simulation can still provide valuable insights. We also honed skills in UI/UX design to communicate complex data simply and effectively.

What's Next for EcoRoute.AI Moving forward, we aim to integrate real-time data sources like OpenAQ for pollution levels and live traffic information to refine eco-score accuracy. We plan to expand location coverage and add features like EV charger mapping and personalized route recommendations. Ultimately, EcoRoute.AI aspires to become a trusted companion for eco-conscious travelers, empowering smarter, greener decisions one trip at a time.
