EcoRank — Project Story

About the Project

Environmental problems are not always caused by people who do not care about nature. Often, people simply don't have a simple and engaging way to turn their concern into action.

That inspired us to create EcoRank, a gamified platform that encourages people to take real-world actions that benefit nature and rewards them with EcoPoints.

Users can record activities such as planting trees, cleaning public spaces, recycling waste, maintaining plants, or making biodiversity observations. These activities contribute to their personal score and ranking, while also contributing to the overall score of their local community.

The goal is simple: make caring for nature visible, rewarding, and community-driven.

What Inspired Us

We wanted to solve a simple question:

How can technology encourage people to do something positive for the environment instead of only telling them that the environment needs help?

Many environmental apps focus on information and awareness. We wanted to add another layer — action and motivation.

The idea of seeing your own contribution increase while competing with friends, neighbors, and communities can make environmental activities more engaging. Instead of only saying "protect nature," EcoRank gives people a reason to participate and shows them that their individual actions can contribute to a larger community impact.

How We Built It

EcoRank is designed as a web application with several core components:

  • User profiles to track environmental contributions
  • Activity submission for recording environmental actions
  • EcoPoints to reward different activities
  • Personal leaderboards to rank users
  • Community leaderboards to compare local areas
  • Impact dashboards to show collective environmental activity
  • AI-powered verification to help review evidence submitted for activities

For example, a user can submit evidence of planting a tree. The system can review the submission, determine whether it provides reasonable evidence of the claimed activity, and then award the appropriate number of EcoPoints.

The system is designed to make the experience more than just collecting points. It connects individual actions to community-level environmental impact.

What We Learned

While developing the project, we focused on how technology can be used to encourage real-world behavior rather than simply provide information.

We learned that gamification can be useful when it is connected to a meaningful goal. A leaderboard by itself is just a ranking, but a leaderboard representing real environmental actions can help create a sense of community and accountability.

We also learned that AI should have a clear purpose in a project. Instead of adding AI simply because the project is an AI application, we use it where it can provide value — helping with activity verification and reducing the possibility of users claiming points for activities they did not perform.

Challenges We Faced

One of the biggest challenges was thinking about trust and verification.

If users receive points for environmental activities, the system needs to discourage fake submissions. A simple button saying "I planted a tree" would be very easy to abuse.

We therefore designed an evidence-based approach where users can submit information and images related to their activities, which can then be reviewed with AI-assisted verification.

Another challenge was designing a scoring system that encourages participation without making the points more important than the actual environmental action. EcoRank therefore focuses not only on individual scores but also on collective community impact.

Our Vision

EcoRank is built around a simple idea:

Small actions become powerful when an entire community participates.

We want to make environmental responsibility something people can participate in every day, while helping them discover that their actions are part of something larger.

Our long-term vision is to create communities where planting a tree, cleaning an area, recycling, or observing local biodiversity is not just an isolated activity — it becomes part of a shared movement to create a healthier environment.

EcoRank turns environmental action into community impact. 🌱
