Inspiration

EcoQuest was inspired by the idea that small actions, when gamified, can lead to big change. We saw how apps like Duolingo and fitness trackers keep people engaged through rewards and challenges : so why not apply that to sustainability ? Fighting climate change and pollution can and does feel overwhelming for a lot of us, but by turning eco-friendly habits into a game with points, leaderboards, and achievements, we make it fun, rewarding, and competitive.

What it does

EcoQuest is a gamified sustainability app that tracks, rewards, and motivates eco-friendly actions in everyday life. It turns sustainability into a challenge-driven experience where users earn points (Eco-Points) for actions like walking or biking instead of driving, picking up litter, recycling, or reducing energy consumption.

The app syncs with Google Fit, Samsung Health or Apple Health to track sustainable transportation, estimates CO₂ savings, and provides real-time impact reports. Users can compete on local and global leaderboards, unlock badges and achievements, and participate in community challenges to stay motivated.

Beyond tracking, EcoQuest also serves as an educational hub, offering news, articles, and tips on sustainability. By making eco-friendly choices fun, measurable, and competitive, EcoQuest helps users build lasting green habits while contributing to a healthier planet.

How we built it

While we didn’t develop a fully functional app, we designed and presented the project textually, focusing on every detail to make it as complete and realistic as possible. The process started with brainstorming sessions among the three of us, where we discussed key features, user engagement strategies, and how to effectively gamify sustainability.

We debated and refined our ideas, ensuring that every aspect : from Eco-Points calculations to leaderboard mechanics, was well thought out and impactful. Through collaboration, research, and sometimes even creative problem-solving, we built a clear and structured concept that could be turned into a real app in the future. Our goal was to design an experience that’s engaging, rewarding, and capable of driving real-world environmental action.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges we faced was finding an idea that was both realistic, achievable, and engaging. We wanted something that could truly motivate people to take eco-friendly actions, but it also had to be practical to implement and not just a wishful concept.

Balancing innovation with feasibility was tricky—we had to ensure the app wasn’t too complex while still being fun and impactful. We also debated how to track and verify eco-actions fairly, without making the process feel tedious for users. Through brainstorming, discussions, and refining our ideas, we shaped a concept that we really think is rewarding, competitive, and practical enough to work in real life.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we developed a well-structured, engaging, and realistic concept for EcoQuest. Through extensive brainstorming and discussion, we refined our ideas until we reached a satisfying and feasible solution that effectively gamifies sustainability.

Our biggest achievement was creating a project that feels both fun and impactful, balancing user engagement with real-world environmental benefits. Even without coding the app, we successfully designed a clear and detailed vision that could inspire future development.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned that a great idea doesn’t happen instantly—it takes brainstorming, discussions, and refining every detail to make it both realistic and engaging. We discovered how important it is to balance creativity with practicality, ensuring that an idea isn’t just exciting but also achievable.

We also realized the power of gamification in motivating people to take action. Turning sustainability into a challenge-based experience made us think differently about how to inspire change. Finally, working together as a team taught us the value of collaboration, problem-solving, and persistence, skills that will, with no doubt, be useful in any future project we take on.

What's next for Ecoquest

EcoQuest is just the beginning of an idea that we think, has its potential. Our next steps would be to develop a prototype : starting with a basic version of the app that tracks eco-actions, awards points, and features a simple leaderboard. We would love to explore partnerships with sustainability organizations or local governments could also help turn EcoQuest into a real-world movement with community challenges and real-life rewards.

Ultimately, our goal is to turn EcoQuest from concept to reality, making it a tool that truly empowers people to take action for the planet, one challenge at a time.
