Inspiration

I was inspired by the growing need for energy conservation in our cities. As urban areas expand, buildings consume more energy, much of which is wasted on heating, cooling, and lighting. With sustainable technology like photovoltaic (PV) glass emerging, I wanted to create a solution that helps people make informed choices about energy-efficient glass. I envisioned Glass Wise as a tool to make selecting the right PV glass easier for anyone who wants to reduce their environmental impact.

What it does

Glass Wise is a web app designed to recommend the most efficient PV glass solution for users based on their specific needs. By entering details like location, climate, budget, and window placement, users receive a custom recommendation that factors in each glass type’s strengths—such as Tandem Solar Cells or Quantum Dot Glass with protective coating. The app also provides direct links to vendors and installers, making it easier than ever to transition to sustainable energy solutions.

How I built it

I built Glass Wise using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create a user-friendly web interface that guides users through selecting their ideal PV glass. I researched different types of photovoltaic glass, considering each one’s efficiency, cost, and benefits in various conditions. I then integrated this information into the app’s recommendation system, ensuring users get tailored suggestions based on their inputs.

Challenges I ran into

Developing Glass Wise came with several challenges. I had limited experience with HTML and JavaScript, so learning how to build a functional app was a major hurdle. Another challenge was finding reliable information on PV glass types, efficiency, and costs to ensure accurate recommendations. I also wanted to make the app intuitive for users with different levels of knowledge, so designing a simple, navigable interface took careful thought and iteration.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I’m proud that I was able to create a working prototype that provides personalized PV glass recommendations. Building a functional app with limited coding experience and successfully integrating a customized recommendation algorithm are accomplishments I’m very proud of. I’m also proud of designing an app that makes complex technology accessible and actionable for anyone interested in energy conservation.

What I learned

Through building Glass Wise, I learned a lot about the technical aspects of web development, especially HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I also gained a deeper understanding of photovoltaic glass technology and its real-world applications. Additionally, I learned how important it is to make technology easy to use and accessible, especially when dealing with complex concepts like energy conservation.

What's next for Glass Wise

Next, I plan to refine Glass Wise's recommendation accuracy and expand vendor options. I also want to introduce targeted ads from eco-friendly brands that support sustainable choices.
