Inspiration
Unpredictable weather patterns and improper watering schedules lead to crop failure and immense water waste. Small farmers and home gardeners often lack access to precision agriculture technology. EcoPulse AI was built to solve this problem by combining low-cost, open-source embedded hardware with AI-driven analytics to make precision farming accessible to everyone.
What it does
- Real-Time Environmental & Soil Sensing: Measures soil moisture levels, ambient light, and system health via an ESP8266 node.
- Autonomous Relay Actuation: Triggers a 5V water pump relay automatically when moisture drops below threshold levels.
- Live Web Telemetry Dashboard: Visualizes real-time sensor streams, status badges, and manual override switches via a clean web interface.
- AI Irrigation & Crop Advisor: Evaluates sensor telemetry history to provide context-aware irrigation recommendations and plant health diagnostics.
How we built it
- Hardware: ESP8266 NodeMCU microcontroller, capacitive soil moisture sensor, 5V optocoupler relay module, submersible water pump, and external 5V power circuitry.
- Firmware: Written in C++ using the Arduino framework, handling analog sensor reading, debouncing, relay control logic, and HTTP/REST telemetry publishing.
- Software & Dashboard: Responsive HTML5, modern CSS3, and JavaScript telemetry UI connected to a lightweight backend API.
Challenges we ran into
- Analog Noise & Calibration: Calibrating raw analog readings across varying soil densities to calculate accurate moisture percentages.
- Relay Power Isolation: Ensuring ## Accomplishments that we're proud of Successfully built a fully autonomous, closed-loop irrigation system that works 24/7 without manual intervention.
- Created an end-to-end bridge connecting physical sensors directly to a live web dashboard and AI analytics.
What we learned
- Embedded IoT Architecture: How to configure the ESP8266 to read analog sensor data, handle WiFi reconnections reliably, and send real-time telemetry over HTTP/REST APIs.
- Hardware & Circuit Design: Best practices for power isolation between high-draw inductive loads (DC relay/pump) and sensitive 3.3V logic microcontrollers.
- Sensor Calibration: Converting raw analog voltage readings into normalized, accurate soil moisture percentage curves.
- Full-Stack IoT Integration: Connecting physical embedded hardware to cloud-based APIs ## What's next for EcoPulse AI Implementing multi-node LoRa mesh networking for large-scale farmland coverage.
- Adding solar harvesting circuitry for completely off-grid operation.
