Inspiration
With the growing sustainability initiatives of companies worldwide, we wanted to create a tool that could aid in environmental care while shopping on Amazon.
What it does
EcoPlan is a Google Chrome extension made specifically for Amazon clothing shopping. EcoPlan reads the materials of clothing off of the Amazon page and rates the overall product on a scale from 1 to 5 leaves. If the rating is below 4, EcoPlan will warn the user, saying that the product is "not eco-friendly." It also recommends alternative clothing stores on Amazon that are known to be sustainable.
In addition, EcoPlan implements a habit tracker called EcoHabit, and a notepad called EcoBoard. These are add-ons that can help users track their sustainable practices.
How we built it
We designed a rough draft on Figma, and coded the extension with HTML, Javascript, and CSS.
Challenges we ran into
Coding the extension itself was difficult, as none of the group members were familiar with Chrome extensions. However, we were able to teach ourselves the coding process and execute our initial ideas fairly well within the time constraints.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The main difficulty in coding EcoPlan was getting EcoPlan to retrieve data from the Amazon product pages consistently. This took a good amount of our time, and we are very proud of being able to figure this out.
What we learned
We learned how to code a Chrome extension! While most team members were familiar with HTML, Javascript, and CSS, we never used them towards creating a Chrome extension.
What's next for EcoPlan
Because of time constraints, we were only able to have EcoPlan work for Amazon clothing in particular. We want EcoPlan to rate all Amazon products, and potentially work even for other shopping websites in the future.
