Inspiration
Ecopal was inspired by Duolingo. I’ve always admired how Duolingo gamifies learning with streaks, points, and a motivating mascot that makes something challenging feel lighthearted and fun. We asked ourselves: what if sustainability felt like that, too? That’s how Ecopal was born, a way to make eco-friendly living simple, playful, and rewarding.
What it does
Ecopal helps users build sustainable habits through gamification. You can complete eco-friendly challenges in categories such as transportation, energy, waste, and water. Each challenge earns points, grows your streak, and contributes to your overall impact. Salva, our friendly mascot, encourages you along the way, and the community section shows how small individual actions add up globally.
How we built it
We built Ecopal using beginner-friendly tools like Expo and React Native. We started by sketching out the user flow, then gradually turned those sketches into working screens with challenges, streaks, and points. Our focus was less on advanced tech and more on making the experience simple, colorful, and fun.
Challenges we ran into
Time was our biggest constraint. We had many ambitious ideas but had to prioritize what we could finish in a weekend. We also faced debugging issues, design inconsistencies and figuring out how to keep the experience motivating without overwhelming users.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud that we turned an idea into a working app in such a short time. The fact that Ecopal captures the playful, gamified spirit we envisioned is a big win. We’re also proud of creating Salva, our mascot, who makes the app more engaging and memorable.
What we learned
We learned how to use React Native and Expo effectively under pressure. We also learned the importance of balancing ambition with practicality, and how to focus on the “core experience” of the app rather than trying to do everything at once. Most importantly, we learned that gamification could make even big issues like sustainability approachable.
What's next for EcoPal
We see Ecopal growing into more than just an app, it could become a global sustainability platform. In the future, we want to integrate real-world rewards, like discounts for eco-friendly products, connect with schools to teach sustainability through play, and even partner with cities or nonprofits so that local eco-actions are tracked and celebrated.
