💡 Inspiration

EconoSim was born out of our passion to simplify complex economic concepts through interactive learning. During Hackonomics 2025, we wanted to build something that merges Computer Science with Economics — not just to analyze numbers, but to empower users to experiment and learn by doing. We envisioned a platform where anyone, from students to casual learners, could simulate economic decisions and instantly observe their effects.

⚙️ What It Does

EconoSim is a web-based simulation game where users act as policymakers. By adjusting sliders for tax rates, government spending, and interest rates, players can instantly see how their choices impact three key indicators:

  • GDP Growth
  • Unemployment
  • Inflation

The game uses a simple, intuitive interface and provides immediate feedback, making economic cause-and-effect feel more tangible.

🛠️ How We Built It

We built EconoSim using:

  • HTML5 and CSS3 for structure and styling
  • JavaScript (Vanilla) for interactive logic and real-time calculations
  • Google Fonts (Inter) for a clean and modern visual feel
  • GitHub Pages for deployment and hosting

The economic model behind the game is intentionally simplified to prioritize clarity and learning over realism. We focused on building a responsive and engaging front-end experience without requiring backend complexity.

🚧 Challenges We Ran Into

  • Simplifying economic models: Striking a balance between accuracy and educational clarity was tricky. We didn’t want to overwhelm users with complexity, but we also didn’t want to oversimplify.
  • Designing an intuitive UI: It took time to create a layout that looked clean on both desktop and mobile without using frameworks.
  • Polishing without over-engineering: Since it’s a prototype built during a hackathon, we had to prioritize speed and clarity while resisting the urge to add too many features.

🏆 Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

  • Built a fully functional, responsive simulation game in a short time frame.
  • Delivered a tool that makes economics fun and interactive.
  • Successfully deployed the app live on GitHub Pages.

📚 What We Learned

  • How to translate real-world economic concepts into interactive simulations.
  • How important UI/UX design is in helping users stay engaged and understand the data.
  • How to manage project scope within limited time during a hackathon.

🔮 What's Next for EconoSim: A Game of Choices

We’re excited to continue evolving EconoSim! Here are some ideas on our roadmap:

  • 📊 Add visual charts to track changes over time
  • 🌎 Introduce country-based economic scenarios (e.g., simulate Egypt vs USA)
  • 💾 Enable saving and comparing policy decisions
  • 🎓 Package it for classroom use with pre-set scenarios and reflection questions
  • 📱 Improve mobile responsiveness and accessibility

We believe EconoSim has the potential to become a fun and valuable educational tool, and we’re excited to see how far it can go.
