Inspiration
We were inspired by the lack of accessible, engaging tools that teach financial literacy—especially in a way that is fun, localized, and practical. Many people struggle with real-life financial decisions because they are never taught the basics. We wanted to solve that through a mobile-first platform that educates while entertaining.
What it does
EcoNomics is a mobile financial literacy game that simulates real-life economic decisions through interactive roleplay. Users take on scenarios like budgeting, saving, investing, and managing emergencies—learning how money works while making choices that impact their virtual finances. It’s designed to be fun, educational, and globally accessible.
How we built it
We designed the entire UI/UX in Figma and built the mobile app using React Native and Expo. The app simulates real-life financial decisions through roleplaying scenarios such as budgeting, saving, investing, paying taxes, and handling emergencies. We also used localStorage (AsyncStorage) to track user progress and game state.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was designing content that is globally relevant yet locally understandable. We also faced issues in integrating device compatibility with Expo and debugging networking issues for mobile previews. Turning educational content into an engaging, gamified flow was creatively demanding—but rewarding.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud to have built a cross-platform financial literacy game from scratch, designed intuitive UI/UX in Figma despite being first-timers, and successfully simplified complex economic concepts into engaging roleplay scenarios. Our focus on global inclusivity and accessibility makes EcoNomics a meaningful step toward financial empowerment for all.
What we learned
This project taught us a lot about cross-platform development, user experience design, and most importantly, how to simplify complex economic concepts into interactive simulations. We also gained hands-on experience with React Native, Figma, and structuring decision-based game flows.
What's next for EcoNomics
We plan to expand EcoNomics by adding more real-life financial scenarios, multi-language support, and region-specific content. Our next steps also include integrating real-time data, launching on app stores, and introducing AI-based feedback to personalize learning and enhance user engagement globally.
