Project Inspiration

The idea for this project originated from the growing global concern over climate change, particularly the impact of aviation on carbon emissions. As a team with majors in Environmental Science and Sustainability, we wanted to understand how countries, especially those that rely heavily on tourism, balance economic growth and climate mitigation. The project was inspired by the question: Are wealthier nations more equipped to handle aviation emissions, and how does this affect global efforts toward climate change?

We were inspired by the growing global conversation around climate change, particularly how economically disadvantaged countries struggle to address aviation emissions despite relying heavily on tourism. Throughout this process, our team learned that economic disparity plays a significant role in countries' abilities to mitigate aviation CO2 emissions, with wealthier nations having more resources to implement sustainable solutions. We built the project by collecting and analyzing datasets on aviation emissions, GDP, and tourism, using Python to filter and visualize the data. The biggest challenges were combining the provided dataset with an outside one we thought would be valuable to our analysis. The datasets used two different country codes.
