Inspiration
One of the most common health issues facing Americans is obesity, especially impacting low-income Americans. The Economeal app works to help this sect of affected Americans by giving them an easy, accessible entry point to improving their food habits.
What it does
The Economeal app takes a user's health information (weight, height, gender, etc.), location, and weekly food budget. Using this information, our app takes nutritional information from the USDA Food Database and matches it with the lowest-cost groceries in the user's immediate area. This way, users get an easy, usable grocery list that fits within their budget for their next grocery shopping trip. From here, we draft recipes for the user to make with the ingredients that are healthy, tasty, and fit within their nutritional needs. An AI cooking assistant is also available to help to user's improve their cooking skills.
How we built it
React-Native, USDA API, VSCode, Android Studio, Google Live Cloud Service
Challenges we ran into
Many APIs that we tried no longer had usable functions. Additionally, training the AI model proved to be difficult.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to correct import information from the USDA database and get the AI to correctly identify certain cooking techniques.
What we learned
Our knowledge of databases, API implementation, and AI training were put to the test for our project and we learned a lot.
What's next for Economeal
Creating more accurate shopping lists, calorie counts, and refining many of the other features we had implemented.
