Inspiration
We’ve all been there — confused by a credit score, unsure how inflation really works, or avoiding budgeting altogether because it feels overwhelming. Most of us never got formal education in personal finance, and yet it's something we deal with every day.
That’s what inspired us to build EconoGuide: an AI-powered tool that makes economic literacy approachable, personalized, and actually useful. We wanted to create something that doesn’t just quiz you but guides you, like a smart friend who knows a lot about money.
What it does
EconoGuide helps people figure out where they stand when it comes to economic literacy — and then shows them how to get better. Here’s how it works:
Each session gives you 15 fresh, AI-generated questions covering topics like budgeting, inflation, credit, and investing.
Based on your answers, it provides tailored feedback and learning tips to help you grow — no lectures, just useful advice.
The experience feels like a quiz, but the outcome feels like coaching.
Every time you come back, you get new questions. It’s never repetitive, and the goal is to help you build confidence with money.
How we built it
We used React and Material UI to build a clean, responsive interface.
Our backend runs on Python, FastAPI, handling API requests, session tracking, and result analysis.
The magic happens with Google Cloud Gemini AI, which generates both the questions and the personalized feedback/recommendations.
Deployed on Google Cloud, ready for scaling.
We designed everything to be modular, so adding new financial topics (like crypto or taxes) is easy down the line.
Challenges we ran into
AI unpredictability: Sometimes the LLM would generate overly technical or repetitive questions. We had to experiment a lot with prompt tuning to get consistent, relevant results.
Balancing feedback tone: We didn’t want users to feel judged if they scored low, so we spent time crafting feedback that felt encouraging and actionable.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a fully functional AI-powered quiz app that seamlessly integrates live question generation with personalized feedback. The app effectively helps users feel more confident about economics by breaking down complex topics into easy-to-understand questions and advice. Additionally, we designed a clean, friendly UI that keeps users engaged without feeling overwhelmed. Bringing together technology and empathy, this project demonstrates how AI can make financial education accessible and approachable.
What we learned
Working on EconoGuide taught us a lot about how powerful—and tricky—AI can be in education. Getting the AI to generate clear, relevant, and non-repetitive questions required careful prompt design and constant tweaking. We learned that it’s not enough for AI to be smart; it also has to communicate in a way that feels friendly and encouraging. Balancing technical challenges with user experience showed us how important empathy is when building learning tools. Lastly, integrating AI into a real-time app gave us valuable experience in handling latency, errors, and making the system robust for future growth.
What's next for EconoGuide
We’re excited to keep improving EconoGuide by adding new features and expanding its reach. Next up, we plan to build a mobile-friendly version so users can learn anytime, anywhere. We also want to introduce gamification elements like badges and streaks to make learning more fun and motivating. Localization is on the roadmap too — bringing EconoGuide to more languages and cultures. Additionally, we aim to create educator tools so teachers and community leaders can track progress and support their students. Finally, we’ll expand the quiz topics to include areas like taxes, loans, and crypto basics, making financial literacy even more comprehensive and accessible.
