Inspiration
Oftentimes, I would see low-income families sorting through our recycling cans. This made me feel guilty and I wished we could improve their livelihood. With our project, we created an opportunity where low-income families can get recyclable goods more conveniently.
What it does
We have three main features. The first feature is a place where low-income families can find EcoDeposits that have recyclable materials that anyone can access. The next feature we have is an UpCycle that can prevent many bulky objects such as sofas and cabinets to be saved from being thrown into the ocean. Instead, they can be sold to renovators for a new purpose. Finally, we have an image processing model that can determine whether an object is recyclable or not.
How we built it
We used the Django Framework to integrate our front-end and back-end. The code was varied throughout the languages that we used, mainly consisting of JavaScript and Python.
Challenges we ran into
Integrating APIs into our code was quite difficult as the syntax for each one was quite different. Furthermore, stylizing our page to look appealing was quite difficult.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that this is a complete app that could definitely benefit millions of people from around the world.
What we learned
We learned many new libraries and languages such as JavaScript.
What's next for EcoNeighbors Collective
The next thing is to publish the website and make it ready for wide-scale use.
