Inspiration

When we were brainstorming about moving, we asked ourselves: what’s the biggest issue we always run into? We both realized it's the mess that comes with unpacking especially when we're moving into our dorms. There's just normally a very large trash bin that all college students toss their trash into. And honestly, none of it gets recycled at all! It just all gets tossed together and wasted. That’s when we realized we needed to take initiative and create something to help people recycle properly during moves. That idea became EcoMove. An app that not only helps you when moving, but teach you more!

What it does

EcoMove is like a smart moving buddy. You just need to open up the app, scan some items, and it'll spit out what classification the object is, whether it's trash, recyclable, or even compost! It also allows for some community sharing by having features of posting some leftover moving items you may have that others want. Instead of everything ending up in the dumpster, EcoMove helps movers recycle smarter while also making connections.

How we built it

We sketched our design in Figma, taking inspiration from templates to map out what movers would actually see and use. For item recognition, we used a YOLOV8s model using a public trash dataset linked in our Github. We then used ReactNative and Expo so the code can function as a mobile app.

Challenges we ran into

  • Finding a complete database for drop-off facilities was tough. We had to merge and refine several smaller datasets as there wasn't one large dataset with everything.
  • The model wasn't very well-suited for general purpose, so it struggles with live scanning occasionally.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • We built a working prototype that actually scans, guides, and connects movers.
  • We designed a clean and simple UI that still delivers all the core features

What we learned

One of the biggest things we learned is that feasibility really matters. At first, we had a ton of ambitious ideas, but we realized we needed to focus on what we could actually build in the time we had. By narrowing down, we were able to maximize our time and still create something useful and impactful

What's next for EcoMove

We want to try integrating accounts to let you share the recycling stats and achievements with others. Currently, it only saves for the individual user and has no capability of sharing. In addition, we also want to add working with charities to have a donation option. Lastly, we want to deploy this app to high relocation cities to test out our features and how well it works for moving.
