Inspiration
Our Inspiration came from a bunch of different things we took inspiration from duolingo for our level up design, we also took a lot of time on making it genuinely educational whatever you put in the throwing query we got that inspo from a hydration app that gives you a fun fact every time you drink a certian amount of water.
What it does
A variety of things from doing co2 tracking based off of what you recycle it also gives you incentives by giving you levels for every things you recycle, as well as also educating people on what they recycle and whether its right or not.
How we built it
We built it originally through flask+react a python backend and js frontend sadly we ran into a big runtime error that prevented our code from running for an entire hour so while one person figured out how to solve the error which we couldn't the other 3 worked on taking all the code from the project and working on a simpler frontend and backend all put into one file by using a html with a json launch frontend and a java backend we had to heavily enhance our code with ai, as not even a proffesional could figure out our problem in the original code for the first 30 minutes, we uploaded both codes so you can take a look.
Challenges we ran into
First we came across a live share problem where it kept disconnecting our liveshare which stopped us from working on our project for minutes at a time. This really set us back because we lost time that could have been used to improve our final project. Another problem we ran into was infinite loading, the website would keep loading and never run. This was eventually solved within the last 10 minutes and the main issue being a while loop added to track a ridiculous high number of points, which made it keep running and caused the infinite loop. Another problem we also ran into was a problem of the local:host. When we ran a local host it would only work on some of the devices and not all of them, this set us back a lot because we all weren’t able to see the changes in code.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to solve some very hard bugs in our code, something so small it was easy to overlook. Such bugs were liveshare issues, loading issues, and such. The second accomplishment we are most proud of is our point system. By valuing different items based on material, we were able to give the user an incentive of beating other people in ranking.
What we learned
Local host isnt great in big groups as it gets problematic and hard to keep up with everyone's edits. As well as changes that are being made to a project should be put into a git repository every 15 minutes and when working with a database clear the data every so often as your data can start to clutter and break stuff as we learned in the major challenge we faced.
What's next for EcoMatch
We planned to add a progress bar to show how much the users impacted the environment. This motivates them to continue to recycle more. The bar would mention how a certain amount of plastic recycled would help save a certain amount of turtles or help save a portion of the coral reef. Small goals in order to make them feel proud of recycling. We planned to add a similar bar for CO2 in order to show how much of an impact they have on the environment. We also planned on improving our login functions. Right now it is only per device, so you could only login on one device the entire time. We planned to use google to create a login but had a lack of time. We wanted to use google so that people could login in on any device they want instead of just one.
