What it does## 🌟 Inspiration
The world generates over 50 million tons of electronic waste each year, yet less than 20% is recycled properly. At the same time, millions of people lack access to affordable technology.
We were inspired by this imbalance — and driven by the belief that sustainability and innovation can go hand-in-hand.
Thus, EcoMarket was born: a platform to transform electronic waste into opportunity through smart recycling and sustainable commerce.
🛍️ What it does
EcoMarket is a circular economy marketplace where users can:
- ♻️ Recycle old electronic devices and receive instant credit using AI-powered photo estimation.
- 💰 Buy refurbished and eco-friendly products using their earned credits.
- 📊 Track their environmental impact (CO₂ saved, e-waste avoided).
- 🚚 Send their items easily with smart logistics and a user-friendly experience.
- 🎮 Enjoy a gamified platform that rewards sustainable actions.
🏗️ How we built it
- Frontend: Built with React.js and TailwindCSS for a clean, responsive experience.
- Backend: Powered by FastAPI in Python for scalability and async support.
- AI Model: We used YOLOv8 for image-based device detection and condition estimation.
- Database: PostgreSQL for core data and Redis for fast cache & session management.
- Authentication: Implemented via Firebase Auth.
- Deployment: Frontend on Vercel, backend on Render, and ML pipeline on Colab.
- Roboflow: For training and managing the computer vision dataset.
🧱 Challenges we ran into
- ⚙️ Integrating AI with the backend while maintaining a smooth user experience.
- 🧠 Simulating a realistic dataset for device damage detection in limited time.
- 🔒 Ensuring secure and scalable user authentication + credit tracking.
- 🕓 Time management: balancing between UI polish and ML functionality.
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of
- 🚀 Delivered a fully functional MVP in record time.
- 🧠 Deployed a working AI model that estimates device value via image upload.
- 🌎 Built a beautiful and engaging marketplace focused on social impact.
- 💡 Designed a modular, scalable architecture ready for real-world growth.
📚 What we learned
- How to quickly build and deploy a multi-stack product under pressure.
- Best practices in connecting AI pipelines to web backends.
- The power of combining social good with tech entrepreneurship.
- That small features (like showing the user's positive environmental impact) go a long way in creating emotional engagement.
🚀 What's next for EcoMarket
- 📲 Launching a mobile app with React Native.
- 🌐 Expanding product categories to eco-clothing, reusable tech, and green accessories.
- 🤝 Partnering with NGOs, schools, and governments to provide refurbished devices to underserved communities.
- 📈 Using AI to dynamically adjust prices based on market trends and device demand.
- 🔒 Integrating blockchain-based traceability for full transparency of product history.
