InspirationThe inspiration came from a simple observation: the "cost" of smoking is double-edged. It destroys personal health and generates massive environmental waste (filters are the most littered item on Earth). We wanted to create a solution that bridges the gap between individual willpower and the climate crisis. If someone can stay disciplined enough to save their own life, that same energy can be harnessed to save the environment. What it doesEcoLungs acts as a personal health coach and environmental steward.Proof-of-Sobriety: Users log their smoke-free days to trigger real-world tree plantings through our reforestation partners.7R Habit Integration: The app provides daily tasks centered on Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle, and Rot to replace the smoking habit with sustainable living.Rewards Engine: Users earn "Green Economy" vouchers and evolving NFTs that represent their growing "Digital Forest," which scales as their health improves. How we built itWe built a cross-platform application focused on transparency and impact:Frontend: A clean, nature-inspired UI/UX designed for high-stress moments (cravings).Blockchain Integration: Used decentralized identifiers (DID) to track user milestones securely and mint "Proof of Growth" NFTs.Smart Contracts: Automated the "Rewards" logic—once a milestone is verified, the contract triggers a donation to a reforestation API and issues the user's reward.Sustainability Tracker: An algorithm that calculates the amount of $CO_2$ offset based on the number of trees planted and cigarettes not smoked.Challenges we ran intoThe biggest hurdle was the Verification of Intent. It is difficult to "prove" someone hasn't smoked in a decentralized way. We addressed this by implementing a peer-to-peer "Buddy System" and community validation, where users can earn extra rewards for acting as accountability partners for others. Another challenge was balancing the 7R framework so it felt like a lifestyle upgrade rather than a chore.Accomplishments that we're proud ofThe 7R Synergy: Successfully mapping each of the 7Rs to a specific stage of the quitting process.Visual Impact: Creating a dashboard that shows a "Gray Lung" turning into a "Green Forest" in real-time.Partnership Pipeline: Designing a system that allows eco-friendly brands to sponsor rewards, creating a self-sustaining circular economy. What we learnedWe learned that people are more likely to stick to a difficult personal goal when they feel part of a larger mission. Quitting for "yourself" is hard, but quitting to "save a forest" adds a layer of social and environmental responsibility that increases success rates. We also gained deep insights into how Web3 can be used for "Social Impact Mining"—rewarding positive human behavior. What's next for EcoLungsOur next step is the "City Canopy" Update, which will allow users in the same geographical area to pool their "Reward Trees" to create actual physical parks in their own urban communities. We are also looking into integrating wearable tech to automate health tracking (heart rate and lung capacity) to provide even more accurate "Proof of Health" rewards.
